So I bet the reason his approval rating is creeping up is an indirect consequence of "Uh oh, look at our 2016 frontrunners" queasy feeling among a lot of people.

Towards the bottom of the page is where it shows each prez's approval trend throughout their whole term, and it does appear that most, not all, enjoy a mild uptick toward the very end of their presidency.

I do think President Obama's recent increases do have something to do with the comparisons to the 2016 frontrunners, but the historical trends here show it could just be because he's almost done.

People had been saying there would be a problem BEFORE we invaded Iraq. Everyone knew you had Sunni and Shia and the only reason they weren't fighting already was because of a brutal dictator keeping things under control. Then we proceeded to do just that, and to top it off, we didn't go in with enough forces. Then we removed the jobs of those in the military, thus fueling an insurgency. Then the heavy-handed use of the military, made necessary by not having enough troops, caused more hate and more insurgents, which didn't help.
The insurgency was there long before Obama was elected.
