Most of the discussions on this board who can help us win and mostly immediately. That is important but maybe not in the long run since we should probably expect new coach to leave in next few years.

Our conference sucks and at best might be able to improve five places to say the sun belt level but still be a one bid league. Most expect the big 12 to expand in a year or two. The dominoes will fall and we should be prepared to move at least back to the future and join of our old CUSA friends IF Bham builds a new stadium - football may not be the dead weight for a new league as it has been.

Do any of the candidates have connections/prestige to help us advance as a program. Maybe there is an old fart coach that could help us in this most important task. Remember Gene got us up from sun belt up to Metro/ old CUSA

I've always thought the burden of conference alignment was something that should be the responsibility of those further up the chain of command.

Captain Queeg for AD.
Conference affiliation has a window seat in the bus that football is driving. I think top tier basketball play will turn some heads, but I don't think it'd ever carry us into another conference in the current environment even if we became UConn overnight. So, to me, it's not so much of having enough success to warrant the attention. That's really on the football program's shoulders. I think it's more a matter of just not letting the bottom fall out and having our most storied program become blemish instead of an asset.
No basketball coach is going to get us a better conference.
We could go 30-0 or 0-30 and we are still CUSA
Getting into a better conference does not depend on what UAB wants or does. It depends upon who wants UAB. Gene Bartow had the national reputation to get UAB into better conferences that later suffered from realignment after he was gone. Where we were when he left us is where we are today. If UAB wants to attract the attention of a better conference, it must show that it can pay for the facilities, staff and athletic administration commensurate to its desired status.

Until the system BOT demonstrates more than begrudging tolerance for UAB's athletic growth, we suffer the image of being a ship dominated by a remote controlling Crimson centric BOT. I seriously doubt any conference buys the story that UAB President Watts killed the football program all on his own, nor that its return was all to his credit.
Football is going to get is in a better conference. There is a plan. Hopefully the ad gets on board with it.

Glad to hear we have a plan.
Thanks for all the comments.

I actually agree with most. I agree the basketball coach or even program would not be the prime factor in our quest to join the ? American conference?

Just are there any coach candidates that would any connection(s) with the conference or ADs or presidents.

If is often a personal connection can make a difference - it is often who you know that counts and it never hrts
Keeping up the current level of play would be beneficial.
The only coach that can help basketball's conference is the football coach. Football drives the train in the NCAA.

We will see how our commitment to football affects our stock in a possible realignment scenario. Maybe we will get another shot to move up. Or maybe we missed that chance when it passed us by several years ago.
It will be the middle years of the next decade before all the effects of the resurrected football program are known with any certainty. Therefore, if football is going to be the determining factor of conference change, we must hope realignment is still in process at that time a decade from now.

Just as the mantra of real estate is "location, location, location", the mantra for UAB's athletic future is "funding, funding, funding".
