A recent study done through Harvard's McLean Hospital show anabolic steroid use cause a lowering of sycllo-inositol, a sugar that prevents neuro-toxin damage in the brain. The steroid usage causes a rise in beta-amyloid protein which initiates the onset of dementia. The recent focus on head trauma and dementia would seem to be confounded with steroid usage in athletes.
