some of the most surprising departures:

Devon Russell DB/KR 2015 class gone-actually one of the two starting KRs
Juwan Lewis RB 5th year senior special teams ace gone
Figureroa-a guy that started as a true freshmen on the DL gone probably the most shocking departure
Will all these 8 TEs stick with the position or are some eligible for a change(a la Cole Gardner)? Granted Tuttle played more of passing downs type versus a traditional run blocking TE.

Bummer to see Figureroa leave. Lewis probably saw the writing on the wall with the talented young backs due to get most of the load this year.

Man, agree on Figureroa. He went from potential star to now gone. Strange year.

In football it is the season, Easter, for this metaphor:

"Don't count your chickens before they hatch."

In college football, do not look at rosters until (during or after) spring ball or spring semester ends.

Football players who don't intend to come back probably don't do spring ball.

College basketball players who don't plan to come back typically make their decisions right after the season ends. They start looking for new homes and coaches look to fill their scholarships.

I don't know this for a fact, but in hoops I assume the head coach sits down with each player within say two weeks of the season ending and evaluates, etc. him (or her) much like an annual review in the work world.

Player might be told PT might be an issue, what to work on, weight/strength/stamina/speed issues, etc. as well as well as skill issues, e.g., shooting off the dribble, driving to the hoop, post moves, rebounding, etc.

Figuerora the only real loss. Showed promise as a true freshman, but played mostly out of necessity. Russell was non-existent. I believe I heard Lewis transferred to Ferris with Reggie Bell.

As I've said, Maclean is 275 now and he'll definitely move inside to the 3 technique, especially with Figuerora leaving. Time for Dillon to step up. Hopefully Smith Jr. and Dawson show up ready to play. The 290 & 330 lbs is sorely needed. DE should be good if OC and Harris come back healthy. In addition to those 2, you'll have Keels and Crosby to provide a solid 2 deep. Crosby is at 258 now, up from 227 last year. Brown now at 288 and a Sr, so really need him to stay healthy and be a leader on the DL.

Talk of Hendricks moving to DL, but still listed as OL. He's up to 298!

Need to recruit the DL hard this cycle as well. Tough to always backfill with Juco's and transfers.
And I thought Lewis would be the next Thomas Rawls...
Cole Gardner up to 294, need his shoulder fully healthy. Lots of 300lb OL finally. Hopefully it's good weight and strength built in the S&C program.

Talent only half the battle with these kids. Timing, injuries, coaching changes, academics, drug tests, transfers, attitude, motivation, etc. all play a huge role. Not sure what the actual D1 statistics are, but wouldn't be surprised if 25-50% of every recruiting class fails to stick with their original program and graduate in 4-5 years.

If Lewis transferred to Ferris then that's a great choice. That's a top D2 school and he won't have to sit a year.

I went to the Ferris/GVSU game last year. That was an amazing sight to see. If you get a chance to go to this year's game, do it.
Yeah, from what I was hearing at the end of the season, those 2 were both expecting to go there and start right away. The Ferris roster isn't updated, and there isn't anything out in the google world about either of them actually transferring, so I have no idea whether it actually happened or not.

Would be surprised if the Ferris head coach doesn't get a promotion to at least the MAC level sometime soon.

One thing about GLIAC and D-II.

It is NORMALLY deep under the radar, UNLESS, the program is very, very good.

GVSU and Ferris State have been very good and have gained a lot support (everyone loves BIG winners). Wayne State was had good success around 2010 and 11.

Think of some of those GVSU teams like the Golden State Warriors... Very dominant.

GVSU, though, has a 10K stadium with a lot of room for standees.

The game day atmosphere at GV for the Ferris game last year was outstanding. There were 16 K people jammed into the stadium that holds 10 K. The grassy hills at the ends of the bleachers and in the one end zone were stuffed with students. It seemed like every student from that school was at the game and dressed in black.

Former eastern player Jaleel Canty also plays for Ferris state.
I am very excited and optimistic about this fall.
There is much more to the story on two of those individuals, let's just say it's not good.

Truth. Most kids don't walk away from a full ride scholarship, now with an extra 3k cash thrown in, voluntarily. Unfortunately they have to learn the hard way that the scholarship is a privilege, and not a right.

Thousands of other deserving kids more than willing to step up and earn the benefit, and do things the right way.
