I don't post often, but I have to tell you it really makes me sad to see Tiger "fans" lamenting the success of the Tigers in the AAC tourney and suggesting we should hope they lose to assure Coach Pastner's departure.
First of all, the Tigers are a bunch of mostly 18-21 year old kids who wear our school colors and play their hearts out. They sometimes make mistakes. Sometime they lack effort. Sometimes they're human. But they are always Tigers. And we should always support them.
Now, about coach Pastner. He's run an incredibly clean program for 7 years and had a decent amount of success. He's been a positive role model (you want your kid to act just like Cal?) and a good ambassador for the University who has made a positive difference in many people's lives by his acts of kindness and compassion.
Has he struggled developing some players? Arguably so. Have we lost more games than we, as Tiger fans, would like? No question. Has the declining attendance had a negative impact on the program. Very likely.
But regardless, he is our coach right now and what happens after the season has been decided and won't be swayed by a couple of wins or a loss in the tournament. To think otherwise is to be naive.
If you're a Tiger fan cheer for the Tigers until the season is over.
If you cheer against the Tigers, no matter your rationale, you're not a fan. Period.
