I don't think so. I think all 4 tourneys that have been completed have been won by an underdog. A couple of other regular season champs have already been eliminated from tourney's that are still going. There will be a lot of regular season champs in the NIT.
Which means that the NIT could wind up being a lot more significant.

I guess that depends on how you look at it.

You could argue, if the upsets in the midmajor tourneys continue, there will be less "quality" teams in the NIT. That is if you assume that mid-level "big name" P5 teams are better than the champions of low major conferences. Many of the conference winners would not have gotten into the NIT based only on RPI and overall resume. Teams like us and, possibly Wichita State, are exceptions. I don't want to argue about who is "better" but, if we have an NIT home game, I would rather get Florida, Alabama, or Mississippi here rather than UNC-Ashville or North Florida. The former schools would create a ton more excitement and a win would go a long way in convincing the "tourists (as Pappy calls them) we are a quality program. In the end, the NIT will have about 10 automatic qualifiers, most of whom would not have gotten a bid without the rule rewarding regular season champs put in a few years ago.
