It seems more likely than not that the University of Memphis is headed for a coaching change next month, and everybody seems to have a list of preferred candidates. With this in mind, Gary Parrish — who covers college basketball for CBS Sports, both on television and online — took the list of names most seem to be bouncing around and grouped them into categories to help make sense of what might be possible and what’s probably unrealistic for athletic director Tom Bowen ...

Very few realistic ones on that list though. Chris Mack really? I know they listed him as unlikely but still, there is no point in even spending time considering him.
Penny would be hilarious and interesting.
Memphis could easily land a talented coach from what some consider a lateral post.
The Memphis gig is much more high profile than some of those gigs at smaller schools. When winning, Memphis is the toast of the town and it's an attractive place to recruit to.
I'm sure there are a lot of recognizable names following the progress of this search.

A real long term risk but a short term fix --

"Very few" out of 24? I don't think you read very far down the list. I agree about Mack, but he is listed under a category named "Highly Unlikely." After those 5, almost everybody on that list is realistic.
In my opinion Memphis needs to only go after the guys who have been successful college coaches. They tried the unproven coach great recruiter already. I think Penny Hardaway would be a huge risk.

Memphis is a great job and will attract names that are going to surprise some on this board. Their only problem is the Josh contract.
I think Archie Miller would be a great candidate, I would think he would leave Dayton for Memphis. Memphis is a very good job.

I actually think Gregg Marshall and Archie are more realistic than this article gives credit for. I think Ed Cooley and Buzz Williams are more unrealistic than those 2. There are also some I don't think Memphis would even want (like Mark Fox).

I still remain very high on Brad Underwood.
I’m concerned that the rebuild may take a little while. The AAC needs Memphis basketball to be Memphis basketball fast and with a new coach coming in (which I’m not disputing is necessary) how long will the rebuild take? Combine that with the question of will any high profile coach like a Pearl, Miller, Buzz Williams, Hurley or Marshall be willing to keep Lawson on as an assistant coach knowing he can hold 2 to 4 of the best players on the roster over his head at any time? If Lawson isn’t retained and the kids transfer a new coach will be coming into a roster that’s essentially bare of high level talent.
Penny Hardaway....lol

was he oh-for against UC?

No, he was on the team that upset Cincinnati the year after their Final Four run and their 4-0 sweep of Memphis (then Memphis State).

To give you some frame of reference, Justin Fuente won a conference title in his third year at Memphis and he took over a football program that was in much worse shape than the basketball program could ever be. Provided we make a good hire, Memphis basketball should turnaround quicker than that.

Beat me to it. We went from the worst team in FBS to a final ranking of #25, in 3 seasons. BB is easier to turn around than that. We are in a great recruiting area, and I think the right choice, paired with keeping the Lawsons, can turn us around in 2 years.

We actually played well at the beginning of this season, and just got worse as things went on. That's more on the coach, who will be gone right after the season.
Basketball is much easier to turn around than football.
