Coach Keats (UNCW), who leads the CAA in basketball, will leave UNCW before coach Jones leaves ODU. As you know, Keats was an assistant at Louisville before he was named head coach at UNCW. As I see it, UNCW is only a stepping stone, as coach Keats has already put UNCW on the top. It is just the nature of today's game.
ok
Agree. We are going to be stuck in purgatory with Jones for a loooooong time. He'll be just good enough to not get fired.

What a great thread.
If Coach Keats had a season like JJ had last year, he would have said bye, bye to ODU. That's the point in this hire. Get you an established coach that's committed to your program instead of creating a constant Merry-Go-Round of coaching changes at ODU. ODU is not a prolific tournament program so any success a coach has would only raise his stock and widen his path to a better job.
So get a coach who won't have success so you don't have to replace one that does? Got it.

Last year all of you were singing the praises of Jeff Jones including his most vocal critic, RRM. Where's the loyalty? After turning the program around in a short period of time he could have put his name in the pool of applicants but he expressed his commitment to ODU by pledging not to seek another job. He's done such a good job in the eyes of the conference that his team was voted 2nd behind tournament participant UAB. However, after watching this team from day one, my conclusion is it isn't very talented. The UAB game was revealing. Blame can be spread out evenly. Not all of it lies on the coach.

As far as the zone is concerned, I saw it deployed against FAU and FIU and it failed miserably. The team looked out of place while in it.
Whose fault is it that they can't play zone? Do we just happen to have a bunch of players who are genetically predisposed to suck at playing zone defense?

Same could be said about Wilder

Maybe, but to be fair he was successful in FCS and most would have expected some rocky years after the move up and after TH graduation.

And Jones has been highly successful in big time college basketball.

That is certainly debatable.

58% winning percentage at UVA with an a sweet sixteen and elite 8 appearance. Half of the seasons winning 20+ games. Finished top 3 in conference 9 out of 13 years at American.

But nobody should expect any rocky years following a 5 win season and/or losing roughly half the roster from last year due to graduation or disciplinary problems? That logic confounds me.

58% is basically what we are looking at this year. If you are ok with that, cool. At UVA he took over a powerhouse and rode Terry Holland's coat tails until he couldn't anymore and was ultimately fired with the program so low that it took 20 years to recover. He then went on to American, where in a decade was so impressive that nobody hired him away. I guess there are two sides to every coin. And by the way, at UVA he oddly had problems with his teams posting horrible shooting percentages. Strange coincidence, I suppose.

Say what you will about his coaching prowess, the job he's done at odu, his marketability as a coach etc., but it's very telling he was stuck at American for over a decade and didn't get another gig anywhere else until his buddy from UVA hired him after a 13-19 season.

Many people were unimpressed with the hire initially and talked themselves into it after our first two seasons.

A huge step backwards in season 3, which is exactly what we've seen, should give even the biggest jones supporter pause.

Can athletes be ineffective at playing their sport? Can they be hot one night and cold the next? Can a coach perform magic? In sports, not everything goes as planned.

I find it hard to believe that a seasoned coach can't teach a rudimentary skill like boxing out or playing zone. In the end, the skill of the players have to be taken into account. A lot of you put to much emphasis on the coach.
the only thing to make this thread better is Leo and Kate

LOL...
Let me throw in the fact that, on paper, JJ is about to bring in the best recruiting class ODU has ever seen (including this year's redshirts). That was the one thing many JJ detractors were concerned about with his hire.

I get it. Fans are fickle, and this season has me PO'ed as well (Rice at home? Really???). I was pleased with his first two seasons, as well as his recent recruits, and I'm not going overboard because of this sad season.
