As we discussed in other threads, should be some GREAT games with JT4 (EMU) vs. Antonio Campbell (Ohio) and JT4 vs. Nathan Boothe (Toledo) this week.

JT4 put up 20 / 18 yesterday vs. Kent. Folks in Ypsi think he is MAC player of the week for this past week for what he did vs. CMU and Kent. Oh, 19 / 15 vs. CMU.

Thirty nine points and 33 rebounds should be a player of the week unless there is a Steph Curry in the MAC. Lol.

I know, don't overlook Antonio Campbell. His numbers for the week were BETTER than JT4. Maybe a 'Shaq of the MAC'...

So JT4 and Campbell the two MAC players of the week?

MAC centers are so strong this season that the Big Dog in Akron and Maric at NIU can't get the love...

Not just year, but as I said in another thread look at Moss and McCrea the last two years and there are big names going back further too. This league has produced a lot of really good big men.
The Northern Illinois @ Ball State game Friday is on CBS Sportsnet, not ESPN3.

There is no MAC POTW. The POTWsare divisional so each can be POTW in their division.
last week's numbers for Thompson and Campbell-

Campbell- 64min, 54pts, .700(21-30)FG%, .857(6-7)3pt%, .857(6-7)FT%, 25reb, 2ast, 2blk, 1stl.
Thompson- 79min, 39pts, .600(15-25)FG%, .000(0-0)3pt%, .563(9-16)FT%, 33reb, 0ast, 2blk, 3stl.

should be a good matchup on Tuesday.
Campbell had a way better week but he's playing on more rest. It's always tough to say a player would do more with more minute's. Fresh legs helps.

Even though he's a slender 19 year old, I'm stunned that Thompson can play at a high level for nearly 40 minutes a night. The guy doesn't come out of the game unless he's in legit foul trouble. It's more because of our complete lack of big man depth, but still impressive nonetheless.

What's scary is that his numbers would be even better if Murphy found more ways to get him the ball. Our incredibly basic offense doesn't get him as many touches as us on the EMU board would like. I'd say he gets the biggest chunk of his points off putbacks and free throws. Love to know how many of his baskets are actually assisted.

Adding to what Sam posted:

Both JT4 and (Timmy) Bond are both lithe athletes.

Bond literally flies down the court as if we is running on a cushion of air.

Same with Thompson. Both run like a deer. Both have very light bodies.

Neither seem to tire.
A couple of years ago Ohio had a 4 star recruit named Tariq Owens that was listed at 6'10", 210lbs and thats who I immediately thought of when I watched JT4 this weekend. Worth noting, when Owens backed out of his commitment when Jim Christian left he signed with Tennessee and when they weighed him they discovered he only weighed 175lbs. JT4 is listed at 6'10" 220lbs, I'd be surprised if topped 200. With that being said, JT4 looked great around the rim, he elevates quickly.
Ohio moves up to #5 on Hustle Belt's weekly power rankings. Akron is in 1st, followed by Ball State, Toledo, and Buffalo.

I freely admit I have a bias towards the Bobcats, but does anyone think that OU should be higher than #5? I'm not sure what their criteria for power rankings are, but IMO it should weigh more heavily on recent play than the season as a whole.

Ohio is 5 for 6 in the last six games. They've beaten Toledo on the road (#3), Kent at home (#6), NIU at home (#8), Ball State on the road (#2), and Buffalo on the road (#4). The only loss in that stretch was to #1 Akron.

There is literally a 5 way tie for 2nd place. It's hard to fault them when no team has separated themselves as the clear #2 team. Keep winning and you guys will move up.

Here's the records of those 5 teams in head to head match ups against each other-

7-5 Ohio (5-1)
7-5 Buffalo (3-2)
7-5 Toledo (2-3, 1-0 v KSU)
7-5 Kent St (2-3, 0-1 vs UT)
7-5 Ball St (1-4)

There is CLEARLY a difference between 7-5 Ohio and 7-5 Ball State, two teams that played head-to-head twice and Ohio won both times.

Every team has a claim at a higher spot for some weird statline this year. NIU beat Toledo twice but they got us 2 times in their 5-1 start. Toledo blew out Kent and Akron. But lost to OU and UB at home. We haven't even seen CMU or EMU yet and 4 are coming with them.
Things should play themselves out to where there is more seperation between the 2nd and 6th seeds.
JT4 is a true freshman but I didn't realize that he's 21yrs old. I can't find a listing of his birth date anywhere but an article noting his arrest for domestic violence in June 2014 listed his age as 19. Campbell just turned 21 at end of December.

Don't know if it's really relevant at all, but I'm pretty sure he's 20, soon to be 21. Spent last year in prep school. Kudos to Campbell for taking a more traditional route to college, I guess?

Its relevant in that typically MAC freshmen bigs are 18/19yrs old and underdeveloped. Most good to great MAC bigs were not dominant from day 1. JT4 was listed as being 19yrs old on 6/10/14 so he started his freshman year no younger than 20 and is no more than 4 months shy of being 21. By comparison Tony Campbell turned 21 on 12/24/15 which mean he cannot be any more than 5 1/2 months older than JT4.

I mention it because it helps to better understand that these two players are more similar in age and development than their class would suggest.
Development in terms of what? Physical growth? Sure, maybe. Development as a player? Doubtful. One is in his third year of playing against college players and receiving college-level coaching. The other is in his first.

I don't really understand the reason for a comparison or debate like this. Both are very good big men that we are lucky to have.
Demagio Wiggins at BG will be very good when he is older than 18 or 19. He's a freshman who has not physically developed all the way. Itd be unfair to compare him to Thompson right now.

In another debate, it's less inpressive that a 21 year old freshman is doing well, when other kids in his class played high school ball last year.

No one is taking away anything from him, but you also can't act like he's going to develop like some of the kids playing as true freshman will. If you are acting like that, which you may not care to even mention it. For EMU he is good, that's good enough for most people. Coaching and strength can still be added tho. 4 years at this level or higher will earn the guy ALL MAC honors.
