"The media networks unit that includes sports network ESPN, the Disney Channels and ABC recorded a 5.6 percent decline in operating income to $1.41 billion. That was due in part to higher programming costs at ESPN and a decline in subscribers to the sports network, which offset an increase in advertising revenue.

ESPN programming costs rose due to a change in the timing of college football bowl games, and the strong dollar also hurt results, Disney said.

Chief Executive Bob Iger said ESPN subscriptions had risen recently, but investors and analysts are concerned that Disney and other media companies are being abandoned by "cord cutters", especially younger viewers who do not watch traditional television or buy pay TV packages."

This is what I posted about in other threads-big time changes coming to P5 TV revenues and lesser extent to other leagues.
I haven't watched Sports Center in years. I got tired of being given a civics lesson every 30 minutes.

This trend of cord cutting in the single most important issue in future expansion and TV revenues which fuel expansion and the spread between P5 schools and others. It is possibly somewhat of an equalizer and I don't think many recognize what is going to happen with sports revenues. Actually could be good for Memphis in long run. If you want ESPN only on nights the Tigers are on, I think you will be able to do that. Or just the Tiger games.

It would have effectively stopped Rutgers to Big 10 as that was a per TV set revenue marriage. You will be able to order Sports Packs with only AMERICAN Conference or AAC and SEC but no Big 10. It will be your choice which conferences and teams get the money.

I just happen to follow home theater as a hobby and this issue has risen to the top Of all discussions and is well underway.

If you have a smart phone why would you need sportscenter?

Because we would never know which side is the cool side of the pillow nor the Spanish word for fire.

It's the games that ESPN (over)pays rights fees for and draw the relative big ratings. Sportscenter ratings are 30-50% from habitual viewers. I've seen friends turn on Sportscenter to go to sleep.
I look for Comcast/NBCUniversal to make an offer for ESPN in the not too distant future and merge it with their own sports networks (including all regional Comcast SportsNet outlets, NBC Sports, Golf Channel, etc.) to form what will be an inconceivable entity in sports programming.

Point well said. Would give you rep points, but mods have taken my ability to rep away. Plus 50 rep points anyway. Keep bringing the heat:mafia:oum
That's because Disney ruined it. Sell it back to Getty Oil. It was better back then.

That was me back before smart phones. Now I know most relevant things as they're happening or shortly after. ESPN clinging to a sinking ship.

That's my point. And it will change the landscape of college athletics sooner than later.

I used to be one of those. Bet I haven't watched sportscenter in 5 years.

Getty Oil sold ESPN in 1987 or so 1984.

Disney will never sell ESPN, and definitely not to a media rival.

Plus the FTC would oppose such a move.

This is why Sportscenter became something more than just giving scores and highlights. It's more about personalities so people will want to hear with their favorite personalities will say about what's new in sports.

Didn't say they would sell...said Comcast would make a bid.

What's the point of "making a bid?" Disney is the biggest media company in the world. And you think Comcast can just get their most valuable asset like that?

I would argue that Marvel is a more valuable asset for Disney than ESPN is.

And, according to Forbes, Comcast is the biggest media company in the world.
