There's been a lot of discussion lately on the differences between the football playing schools and the non-football schools in the Missouri Valley Conference. I've got a couple questions that I haven't seen anybody allude to and I thought I'd start a new thread instead of derailing the Wichita State threads.

1. If the Missouri Valley Conference (not football) were to add another football playing member (whether Wichita State or someone else) to get enough to sponsor the sport, does the sport automatically get sponsored, or is something that would be voted on, potentially allowing the 6 to remain in the Missouri Valley Football Conference and the MVC continuing to not sponsor the sport. Assuming it is something that would be voted on, which way would the schools likely vote?

2. The Missouri Valley Football Conference has teams that have been together for a while. Is there any way that conference could become an all sports conference? They would have to change their name to differentiate from the MVC obviously, but what else could stop that from happening? The current MVFC has 5 members in the MVC (6 if Wichita State joined as well) that could help in getting automatic qualifiers for the NCAA tourney.
They are separate legal entities. MVFC is just the old Gateway Athletic Conference, which was a women's sports league that sponsored football. MVC could sponsor football and have affiliate members like they do in soccer, but I doubt they do. Only way I could see football back under the MVC umbrella is FBS, which isn't happening anytime soon.
I don't think the MVFC could become its own conference since it has not sponsored the minimum number sports to be an all sport conference and meet the 8 year requirement.
Good questions. On 1., I doubt it would be automatic. Clearly, the four private schools chose to protect themselves from the six public schools (five in the MVFC + WSU, which has always had football potential), knowing that they didn't have (scholarship) football.

I think they'd fight MVC football, tooth and nail.

Pretty sure the two conferences have separate commissioners.
If the MVFC added Wichita St and WSU stayed for two years, the MVC could dissolve the MVFC and bring football in house. The MVC would have an autobid in fb, and the other non-MVC MVFC teams would be out on the street without an autobid. Don't think that will happen, as WSU wants FBS.

Football in the MVC also relaxes the NCAA rule that the MVC has to sponsor two men's team sports besides basketball. MVC schools could decide to drop men's soccer or baseball if the have football.

Hmm...a scenario like that make push those schools to the Summit with Denver and UNO, while the Dakotas go to the MVC as full members.
Only way the Dakotas get into MVC is if the conference is completed gutted.
Nodak, doubt it would be easy to dissolve the MVFC, even with a 6 to 10 vote. Show me the rule saying it only need simple majority or 60%, and I will concede.

I agree. They could probably seek 2 more members and continue to meet the minimum. That might be tempting for the North Dakota administrstion to do the Summit/MVFC like the other 3 Dakota schools

The five (or six with WSU) MVC schools leave. The remaining MVFC is s.o.l.
Summit/MVFC is squarely where UND belongs.

Another "easy" add would be Eastern ILL, to go along with W ILL in the Summit and MVFC.

That gets MVFC back to six -- call it Summit football at that point -- and easily would have a scheduling alliance with MVC schools.

Not a bad outcome!

It is not tempting at all for our admin or for most of our fans.
Of course it would be Nodak. It'd be a slam dunk decision.

Ratings from the UND NDSU game this fall say so.

Plus you get Denver and Omaha all-sports.

Getting an semi-annual NDSU home game is the only thing that is desirable about it.

NDSU's past president put up road blocks into the Slummit and MVFC before. We don't want to be at the mercy of that cabal again.

Denver is not in the Slummit long term.

Long term, a PAC12 hockey league with Denver and Ariz St is where we want to be. We want to be a western oriented school in sports and academia. The Big Sky does that.

So we really want to hook our wagon onto E Ill and W Ill 's fate? Seriously?. They may be forced to close. We want and need to be associated with the Montanas and Idaho. A northern plains CIC.
You get Denver and Omaha in the Summit. Perfect!

There is no such thing as a cabal in the Summit. Stop making things up. Taylor is gone. Chapman is gone. The football game was played. New era.
W ILL and E ILL forced to close?? Please. Your propaganda machine needs a tune up.

Someone isn't literate in Illinois politics. It's been openly discussed.

NDSU will not yet play a game at our place or even agree to it. When that changes, there would be evidence that the cabal is gone.
Trading the non football members for the football playing Summit members would be interesting.

That is if it were possible and WSU adds football.

The MVFC as an all sports conference with Wichita ST would be better.
