Arkansas once gave out rings for finishing 2nd in the SEC West a few years back...

Considering 1-11, 0-12, 1-11 I have no problem with this. This was something the senior class voted on.

6-7 seasons and bowl blowouts are hard to come by and should be cherished. Way to go Champs and congratulations.

Surprised they didn't just make one of these, more deserving

Of course they voted for it; free ring

First class all the way.

I'd be more comfortable if they got a ring for beating Georgia Southern compared to a participation trophy.

Hell, it's just a ring.

That would make sense. Ga Tech made State Champ rings when they beat GS and UGA two years ago. But GState's ring doesn't say anything about that and just says inaugural bowl so its a bit odd.

Maybe it's just me, but... going to the first bowl game in your school's history seems ring-worthy enough.

Another way to throw trash at GSU?
I don't see it as a participation trophy. How I see it is a nice gesture by GSU to give something to a group of guys that stuck with their U and their team through all the tough times they experienced trying to build a program and garner support and getting the Panthers to their first ever Bowl game. That's something no one else will ever be able to claim. Let's face it, the SBC fan base on here is just a small example of what these players put up with for their entire college careers. They didn't work any less hard or put out any less effort than the next team but they had a long row to hoe and stuck it out.
I think they earned something and don't take issue. Some may not like it, understand it or appreciate it but I can see why they did it.

Catmom that is one way to look at, I understand your point, but rewarding average to below average performance isn't something I believe in and at some point in these players lives that will realize that isn't how it works in real life.
Everyone gets a trophy these days in grade school. They tried hard, that's cute. This is an extension of that.
At my next employee evaluation I'm going to see if trying hard with mediocre results allows me to promote folks with my superiors.

Maybe if you won it. Also did not lose it to a team with a losing record that made you end up with a losing record.
Different cultures for sure. I would not even keep a ticket stub to a bowl game we lost.

I don't mind the ring. I do mind Zuul being so prominently displayed on the top of the ring.
That thing is OOGLY.
And it's to commemorate a HUGE milestone in their athletics history. I don't see a problem with it (aside from the design and aforementioned zuul).
