While it certainly helps to have a rim protector (ODU has their own in Stith), I think blocked shots is an overrated stat. Many shot blockers send the ball into the 3rd row, and while that looks cool, that gives the ball back to the offense to run a set out of bounds play. Additionally, many shot blockers in college basketball are at their best as weakside help, and therefore go after blocks at the peril of their rebounding responsibilities. If the shot blocker doesn't get the block, far too often, the man for whom he is responsible gets an easy offensive rebound and put-back.

Don't get me wrong. Blocking shots certainly helps your team (and a rim protector is a comforting feeling for your guards in particular), but I think far too much is made of blocked shots.
I respect that.

In fact, I think they're a little less important since we're seeing more possessions. Still, I don't think blocks are overrated because they the impact they have is pretty strong. It's definitely more risky to stop boxing out/leave your guy to contest, but I like that. Yeah, more often than not it's called a foul or the team finds a way to get the ball up, but the disruption of block is worth the opportunity cost.
We at UTEP have our own shot blocker. It's called the rim.

Rimshot
Shot blockers affect more shots than the ones that they block.

But yes, their man is often the beneficiary of an easy putback.

Shot blockers can win you championships. Okafor at UCONN and Davis at Kentucky. They were game changers.

having guys like okafor and davis can definitely help you win a championship, but it wasn't because they were just shot blocking specialists. those guys were the best college players in the nation the years they won.

Yep. We've given up a lot of offensive rebounds and easy baskets this year. Seeing a shot get blocked is exciting and even the shots that aren't blocked are often altered so it has a positive impact but personally I'd prefer our rebounding stats to be better.
