Bentley
Verhaegh
LaRussa
Arnold(enrolled this spring)

I am guessing Bentley purely because he has some experience under the belt. I'd like to see what LaRussa can do. I hope coaches pick that by spring game so that they have time to plan better plays

I was with you until your final sentence. The spring game will play a big part of who wins the job.
Is David Washington in the picture? Did his injury take him out?
Anybody other than Bentley.
The NCAA magically grants Heinicke another year of eligibility and returns from Minnesota for a year to lead us to a CUSA championship!

This is the answer. I think that Bentley (and Verhaegh too I suppose) will be given an opportunity to compete for the starting position over the summer but if it doesn't look like he's made a lot of progress, Washington will be named the starter because we know what the offense is capable of doing with him. Yes, he tore his ACL and MCL in November but assuming he had surgery ASAP, you're talking 9 months of recovery time before the season starts. Adrian Peterson tore his ACL and played 6 months later and had a career season. Obviously every case is different but I would assume that without any significant setbacks, he should be ready to go.

LaRussa will serve as a backup. Arnold will RS.
It'll be interesting to see what the kid from Beaufort, N. C. brings.
I say Bentley wins the job. He showed signs of progress and Wilder isn't going to want to restart from scratch. If Arnold is the real deal, he may win it over time, but I don't think Wilder throws him to the wolves. In fact, I see him as a probable redshirt.
I really believe Bently lacks the killer instinct needed to play QB. On to many occasions he would go down a yard short of a first down when he knew he would get it on third and fourth down plays.
Bentley will win the job and Arnold will redshirt. If Bentley continues to grow over the summer, Washington will return at WR. If Bentley doesn't grow over the summer, they will turn to Washington. Bentley played well in the last 3 games after Washington got injury (9 tds to 1 int) and hopefully, he can build off of that.
I think it's all on Bentley at this point. If you look at the last few games he wasn't bad at all. The lack of killer instinct thing could have been a result of having your confidence shattered and then you start questioning your ability. But towards the end he started to make strides. 9td to 1 int is a great ending. Another year or mojo building and strength and we'll see where we land in the spring.

But right now I think it's on him to lose the starting job. V is the wild card as he was injured but we'll see. I too think Drayton will RS but if we know if he's the best athlete and gives us a chance to win he'll see the field in some capacity.
Forgot to touch on Washington. I would suspect if healthy he's hauling in TD's.
Drayton Arnold will almost surely redshirt.

A lot will depend on the OLine and who is healthy.
Bentley has the potential to be like WKU's Doughty; similar style and skill set. However, he MUST have time and he must get quicker of foot and fix some mechanics.
Verhaegh, if 100% is a bigger, stronger, and faster version of Bentley.

The problem with the Spring game is that, at least last year, it did not come close to simulating real world conditions. All three QBs had plenty of time to read and throw.
With respect to the performance of the offensive line in real games, I think the coaches got caught with their "pants down".

Even so, IMO, in the Spring game last year, it was Verhaegh, LaRussa, and Bentley in that order.

My guess is Washington if healthy, if not then Verhaegh if healthy, if not then a competition between Bentley and LaRussa, the outcome of which will largely be determined by the abilities of the OL.
It's way to early to answer this with any certainty. There are too many unanswered questions, including (1) will Washington be ready to play, (2) will Verhaegh be ready to play, (3) is Verhaegh for sure even coming back, (4) is Bentley ready to play to his potential, (5) exactly what do we have in Arnold, (6) can LaRussa's play overshadow his "shortcoming"; and if you haven't watched our new punter play QB, you need to watch this.

Obviously some TIC/humor mixed in here, but truth is , I really don't see any way to make a cogent projection at this time. We should have a few more clues after spring training, but as I mentioned in a post some time ago, I don't think we will know who our starter is until September. Still looks that way to me.
I agree Aggie. Spring game is merely a place holder. It isn't even close to simulating real game conditions and in my opinion can be very misleading about a QB's game day ability. In juries are always a wild card and Verhaigh and Washington are definitely WC's. Don't forget we have another QB coming from Beaufort, N. C. While probably a red shirt, until he gets here and has a chance to show something we can't really know.
Consistency is the key. At times Bentley looked amazing. He led drives and made throws that no one else on the team could make. Of course, in the next quarter of the same game, he would start hitting guys in the shins again.

I think QB is wide open right now JV and DW depend on recovery. I think, all things being equal, DW wants to play WR (likely coaches want him too as well), but will do whatever the team needs. Arnold is already here and I think is 90% likely to redshirt. BUT you can't count out that 10% chance that he comes in and just blows everybody out of the water.

Bottom line...it's all open right now and it's going to be a very competitive spring and august.

Like Cr8n, I think SB showed a lot of progress toward the end of the season, and I think it is he who will likely earn the starter's role this season.

I'm not sure of Verhaegh's status due to his injury. I recall some speculation that it was a fairly severe injury which may hamper his qb ability.

I still think DW is most valuable at the WR position, though he could once again play lots of qb.

As for the newcomers; I think Arnold will probably RS, and the kid from NC looks intriguing.

Last year we desperately needed a punter who could help us win the battle for field position. It looks as though Bailey Cate could very well be our man. A 43 yard punt avg. is pretty solid, and his punts seem to have really good hang time.

I watched the hudl video provided and in it he did not take one single snap at qb, and I would like to see that. It is possible that he could be both punter and qb, TH did plenty of that, but I believe it was more out of necessity than anything else.
We now have a plethora of big, strong, and fast FBS WRs. DW at WR is not critical, nor even necessary like at was the past 2 seasons.

This guy is our punter. I would be shocked if he's even considered a small chance at QB. Why would he attend ODU if he wanted to play QB when there are 6 possible QBs on the roster and 2 other better QBs in the same class?

Im not so sure of that. We certainly have a lot of options, but we have 1 stud WR and a bunch of question marks. DuHart has at times been a real threat and at other times been unable to catch the ball. England, Little, Fulgham, Harper, Hayes are all still unknown. Fulgham is the only big, strong guy other than Pascal and DuHart.
