McBride was the right guy tonight. That guy is tough.

He really does have a nice game. Good to see him continue to develop. Too bad he still has a weight issue. It's really the only thing holding him back.

Congrats on the win tonight. You guys took control once you sped the game up and took advantage of the fact that you pretty much had better athletes at every spot.

I really like watching Shaq play. That dude has fun playing. The game. He had his way all night. 04-cheers
Would have helped if UCF actually played some defense. Memphis had no trouble shooting an endless number of uncontested shots.

Shaq has a smile on his face on an 0-fer night. It's impossible not to like the guy.

We were fortunate to heat up at the right times in that game.

Lots of potential in that Golden Knight squad. They sure came to play, and play hard, tonight. Good luck the balance of the season.
Fun game last night, especially for any casual fan...as both teams shot incredibly well. (Heck, UCF's 53% was the best by any Memphis opponent this year).

The same reason why Memphis lost to ECU on Sunday (ECU shot lights out from downtown 11-21, 52.4% while Memphis shot just 23.8%, 5-21), as ECU needed every one of those to win by 1 in the closing seconds.

Sadly for UCF, Memphis made a season high in 3's last night (12-23, 52.2%) last night...as you know its just one of those nights when Goodwin, who hadn't made a 3 all year (attempted just 4), made one in the first half...and on another 3....it hit back of the rim, goes 20 ft up in the air and falls thru the net...there's not much you can do...as the 3 pt shot is the equalizer in college hoops.

Memphis came into last night's game shooting 29.9% from downtown.

Here's some game highlights and post-game interview links from AJ Davis, Justin McBride and Coach Donnie Jones.

Because Mcbride was so winded they were playing 5 on 4 most posessions. He is liability at times with his conditioning even when he is scoring on offense. He needs to take his conditioning seriously in the offseason.

McBride was huge raw kid in HS (zero conditioning in his HS program) who was a project but worth the risk.

He had a serious knee injury just prior to enrolling at UCF, which made him lose over half the season and all the training/conditioning camp and his weight grew to 375 lbs or so.

He has lost over 50 lbs over the last 2 seasons and even in his mins played this year, he is working so much harder because UCF has 3 center options...whereas the last year UCF had just 2...so even in some games played, he didn't get much conditioning benefits as he had to "coast", especially if Blair was in foul trouble.

He still suffers from some inflation in his knee which has limited some of his conditioning work.

He is such a great kid on and especially off the court...probably the biggest cheerleader on the team...volunteers to speak at virtually every basketball booster luncheon as he just loves talking to fans.

Kid is going to be successful in whatever he decides to do after his UCF career is over after next year.

Good stuff. I like watching him play.

Its been fun watching him improve over last 2 years.

At our last booster lunch, I asked him about his somewhat new quick drop step to the non-natural side on the low right block (rolling right vs what most natural right handers do, roll to their left), as if he can an entry pass at that low block on that side, he is almost unstoppable, as defenders still don't think he will roll right.

As the competition has gotten tougher in conf play, he has really picked up his game and has been rewarded with more PT.

In 11 non-conf games...he averaged just 11 mins per game and just 5.5 pts per game...while in conf play, he is now averaging 21 mins per game and 13.1 pts per game.

Only thing that he has struggled with in conf play is his FT shooting...as he started off the year almost perfect...but has struggled in conf play (43%) as some of that might have to do with shooting more FT's with a much higher heart rate/plus being a lot more tired

PS. It was fun watching McBride and Shaq jaw/joke with each other on the court...you could tell both respected each others effort/game.
Looked to me like two teams with equally inept coaching. Memphis is the more talented team and it showed. We were able to hang tough and cut the lead pretty close a few times but it wasn't enough. McBride needs some conditioning work, he was really bad defensively when he was tired and gave up a lot of easy baskets.
The problem with McBride is that if you have an athletic but normal sized center, they can beat him down the court every time after defensive rebounds... that really helped Tulsa out and it's why Brandon Swannegan had a career day for us.

This and he has trouble with more athletic centers when not close to the basket. If you can force him to play defense further out he is easy to beat without help. But offensively, if he can catch the ball near the block, watch out.
