Who do you believe has had more success as an AD? Opinions and why?

This should be an interesting debate. Not sure Selig's ODU resume is long enough to make a fair comparison though.

And we are talking about two significantly different "eras".

Selig hasn't been here long enough to judge. I do know the coaches like Selig a lot.

well if that is the case, Selig is the most successful.

Jarrett was the first AD to offer women athletic scholarships in Virginia. That's ground breaking.

Women's and men's basketball has been on the decline since Wood took over. Last season was a good year for the men, but the overall trend has been discouraging. I guess the question is whether or not football outweighs basketball.

mens basketball has been on decline because we had a recovering alcoholic as the coach who fell off the wagon and to me had stopped recruiting hard because he thought he was going elsewhere.

womens basketball has been on the decline because the previous coach got too comfortable dominating the CAA and also the recruiting suffered, APR suffered, and heard that the players were "running the program"

now, I think although we are struggling this year, I think Jones has done a pretty good job. Barefoot on the other hand I do believe was a poor hiring choice and a change is in order.

I am not going to bash Blaine Taylor. He had a drinking problem and while it affected his coaching it is still a sickness to me. I just hope he got help and is better now.

I do believe recruiting suffered under Wendy Larry towards the end. I will give Wendy credit for finding gems overseas. Ticha Penichiero was a prime example. When she stopped finding those gems we started going downhill.

I am not sure if that was she lost the recruiting touch or if that was a byproduct of being in the CAA. It is tough to get the good recruits to come to ODU when you play in a lower league.

As for Karen Barefoot, I have not been impressed. I wasn't expecting us to beat the top level teams. However, I thought we should be able to at least compete near the top in CUSA and beat the middle level teams in the G5 conferences. Lately we haven't even been able to compete in CUSA.

Jeff Jones, I think can make us competitive. Right now he just doesn't have the tools. Between players being dismissed and injured, we are a bit shorthanded and it shows. We essentially rely on Freeman and if he doesn't carry us we lose.

I hope that JJ can recruit some new players that will make an immediate impact. I am also hoping the two transfers we have sitting out this year will be a huge help next year. What I don't want to see is even more players being dismissed for various reasons. I would hate for us to have a reputation of recruiting players that are trouble and scare potential good recruits away.

i do think that Blaine did a lot of good things for this program. From everything I can gather, he did get help and is doing well. I have heard him on a couple of ASN and Comcast prodcasts.

Wilder was hired in 2007, Selig didn't come until 2010, so doesn't Jarrett get credit for hiring Wilder?

Also, Selig did not start the hunger and drive for ODU Football, Runte did. Having said that, I really believe Selig is capable and eventually will bring ODU Sports back to respectable levels. By this I mean many more ODU programs, e.g. MBB, WBB, Field Hockey, Sailing, Soccer, etc., will once again compete well and make us all proud at the highest levels. No question in my mind that Jarrett, at this point in time, was more successful. Selig has a real chance and the support to surpass him, however.

To be sure. Look at the improvements at WKU since he left. He'll make us better. We just don't know when.

I think this is a great question. But unfortunately, the two can't be reasonably compared because the landscape is/was so different. Jarrett did a great job with certain things. Old Dominion was an "upper middle class" program in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. But the P5 pullaway has put us firmly in the "middle class".
There is not much Selig, or anybody, can do to improve us. We either maintain our status or drop from here. But Selig knows what that will take, and he is better than Jarrett at that part; raising money.

What about buying a couple of P5 coaches that can bring in P5 talent instead of spending 125 million on a new stadium that we aren't ready for? Between Butler, VCU, Gonzaga, SMU, and Wichita State, the correct path forward is actually pretty clear.

When it comes to accomplishments on the field, no doubt Jarrett was more successful. When it comes to dollars, it looks like Selig.

Bottom line is that we are talking about two different eras. Most of our national championships and other successes (but not all) have come in women's sports. Mid majors will never have the successes in women's athletics they did 20 or 30 years ago.

Plus both women's b.ball (Larry) and field hockey (Anders) lost legendary coaches (even though Wendy didn't finish strong) on Selig's watch
