If the students approved, they could be on their way to D1. But where will they go? Big West may have to find another school to make it even out. WAC could give them an invite to help Bakersfield State out, and could move to Big West later. This school also considered re-starting their defunct football program as well.
There is no such thing as Cal San Diego. It's UC-xxx. -2
Not sure if anything was changed but they were looking only at the Big West for a D1 move. However, maybe things have changed and give the WAC a look even though the academic sides isn't as appealing to the Big West.
They should join a prestigious academic conference if not the Big West.
I see no reason the Big West wouldn't take both UCSD and CSU-B. More schools for the bus league.

And that's quite an athletics fee! Be curious to know what UCSB students pay.

So what? Many people say the school names differently, but they are the same schools. I rather use Fullerton State, Fresno State, Long Beach and so forth because it is much easier to say than saying them as Cal. State whatever.

CSU-B was snubbed many times by the Big West and still hasn't been invited by the Big West to round out to 10 members. However, CSU-B is liking the WAC and they are separating themselves from the other Big West schools and getting more exposure by playing around the Western US.

The Big West currently has nine members. The article left out UC Irvine. So adding UCSD would "even out" the conference at ten and simplify scheduling. Academically they're one of the top schools in the country (which matters in the Big West), they have a large enrollment, they're located in a big market and they fit well geographically. I think the conference would take them without hesitation.
UC santa cruz shouldn't really be a d3 school but that is a big jump going to d1.

They have to spend 8 years in D2 before they can apply to D1. It is a rule to prevent D3, NAIA and JC teams from moving up in droves.
When did that happen? I remember recently Houston Baptist moved straight from NAIA with a probationary period.

How do you even follow this stuff? I'm continually impressed with your knowledge of obscure schools.

Right, just like Sac State has flourished in the Big Sky and "separated" itself.

Every CSU & UC school in DI that doesn't play FBS football should be in the Big West as a full member. It's ridiculous not to.

It is the rule they put in place after Houston Baptist upgraded from NAIA. You have to be in D2 for 8 years before you can apply for D1.
Mongoose, it's time for the BW to expand.

UCSD, Portland State, Seattle.

or UCSD, Grand Canyon, Seattle.

Increase regional exposure in San Diego, Phoenix and Seattle.
Can't see Portland St giving up Big Sky football. I know Davis and Poly have a nice deal. Doubt Fullerton will let that slide for Portland, though.

And Seattle has no baseball team, correct? And would Long Beach et al really draw that well in Seattle in men's bball and baseball, with so many other options?

Grand Canyon might be reasonable. But then again, UC presidents might object to For-Profit school.
Seattle has baseball. And their men's soccer team advanced to the Sweet 16 this past year.

I think you are right. 10 may well be left open for them instead of Bakersfield. WAC would certainly take them.
