To me, this trumps ECU giving their coach the boot as the strangest decision I've seen recently. I thought it was silly when the Bears fired him, but this doesn't begin to make sense to me at any level.
They have been rebuilding for a few years now and have gradually been getting better under Smith. They just got the franchise quarterback, too. A year or two of more stability and then the wins probably would have started stacking up. I don't understand the logic behind the move at all.
the Bucs franchise is a total ClusterF#$@. Which, as a Saints fan, I find amusing.

Yeah I was a little surprised by this too. The coaching carousel is getting ridiculous. Lovie gets two years. Dude in San Francisco gets a year. Cleveland fires a coach every third game. The most stable franchises tend to have some stability at the coaching position. now the question is who do they hire?
Atlanta firing Michael Smith was pretty stupid to me especially when the GM is the one who F-ed up the roster.

It's like all strategic thinking straight up went out the window in favor of what have you done for me lately? I'd probably understand if they pulled the Golden State we're-over-the-hump-now so let's upgrade before we plateau or the new face of tanking, but it's no where close. It just seems like these organizations just shoot themselves in the foot, wait just long enough to put some more bullets in the revolver, and then shoot themselves again.
Tampa Bay's QB choices the last several years have been questionable.
I would even say that it is debatable that Winston will be a long time success.
TB was in the playoff race at 6-6, then lost their last four games. The penalties, dropped passes and turnovers were a huge problem for the Bucs, and a lot of that is coaching. Tough to watch at times. They also want to keep their OC, Koetter, who has done a nice job with Winston. He'll probably be the next HC.
"For the first time, the Bucs ranked in the top 10 in total offense (No. 5) and defense (No. 10), but those numbers were deceptive. The Bucs struggled to get the ball into the end zone, ranking 20th in points. They were 26th in scoring defense, allowing 24 points or more 10 times." Coaching again.
That said, Tampa Bay's ownership is horrible, and three coaches in five years is no way to make things get better.
I am a lifelong Tampa fan and this was no suprise to the true fans at all. Lovie's defense had been terrible, he put his neck on the line for "his" guys as FA to bring in and they all tanked hard (Melton, Jennings, M Johnson, A Collins, J Mccown, M Wright to name a few). It was Lovie's personnel moves and defensive philosophy that cost him his job. Tampa is promotion the OC to head Coach. Eagles and Dolphins forced Bucs hands as he was their top HC choices and Tampa had to fire Lovie to keep the OC by moving him to HC and keep the continuity with Winston for his own growth.

He did the same thing in Chicago, but also let his ego get in the way with Riveria.

Thanks, I appreciate the insight. Ironically enough, if it's like that, then they made the change for the sake of stability. Either they ate the years on his contract or there would have been another major change anyway. Really between a rock and a hard place there, but I can understand wanting to opt to keep the OC. He already developed a rapport with the franchise quarterback, and Winston was doing well in his system. Him leaving would have pretty much meant starting over anyway.
That makes sense to me now. Before, I was thinking the only way to really salvage it was if they hit a home run by picking up Fisher from FSU or something.
And don't get me wrong, i really like Lovie as a person, he is an absolute stand up guy and that was his downfall. He was loyal to his players from the past and they let him down. Plus, more teams have figured out how to beat the Tampa 2 (run slant routes, lol) and he hasn't been able to plug that hole.
Plus look at how bad Matt Ryan has been the past 2 years without Koettner. His play fell off majorly. They don't want that to happen to Winston. This was really Tampa truly giving Winston the keys to the team like Peyton Manning. I expect some major changes in personnel on Defense as soon as they hire someone. I expect Gerald McCoy could be moved quickly and our entire secondary and all DE's scrapped. I don't expect much change on offense at all unless Logan Mankins retires.
