For all of the talk about OU and their players, we haven't discussed any of UDM's players, even though UDM has a metro Detroit flavor to their team (it just doesn't look like a high major school transfer program, i.e., Gibson, Dorsey-Walker, (Martez) Walker, etc).

They are 2 - 0 vs MAC (TOL and BG, both at home). However, they got killed (by 50 pts) by Vandy.

For those into local (metro Detroit) recruiting, UDM has a lot of players EMU wanted. I know Hoopster was disappointed each time one committed to UDM rather than EMU. Players like Paris Bass, Aaron Foster-Smith, and the two from Detroit Western (McDowell's school), McFolley and Blackshear.

I believe a few of us were disappointed when Brundidge transferred from UofM to UDM, not EMU. Brundidge is finally having a good season.

This may be nice, but there is ONE thing, not where the players come, BUT the way they shoot the THREE BALL. Everyone on that team who attempts the trey can shoot the trey. I'm looking at these stats and they are ridiculously good.

They shoot the three better than many teams shoot the 2-point FG. Amazing...

These are the Saturday Sagarins which are about as interesting as this stuff gets. Look at EMU, UDM, N Fl. NE-Omaha. Like peas in a pod. For those who may be interested, I believe there are 351 D-I schools, so #176 is the '50th percentile' for those who use that statistical term.

I'll say EMU will be a 3 point favorite against both UDM and N. Florida (based on the Sagarins).

Vegas apparently has it closer, say 2 1/2 points:

http://www.vegasinsider.com/college-bask...las-vegas/

Essentially two equal teams with EMU getting a minimal home court advantage.
I know why we recruited Paris Bass because he is a Big Time player. I have seen him play in person a couple of times and he would star in the MAC and Big Ten. He certainly would have looked good wearing green along side Thompson and Lee.

If Bass plays for UDM, this game scares me because McCallum knows how to beat the zone (attack middle and dish out to corner for a 3 ball).

Go EMU!

You are not kidding! I think that was just a UD forum post. But he touched on a lot of very intimate and nuanced topics.

Interesting how the other posters tended to enphasize the importance of winning this (and other MAC) games for recruiting purposes. This is important.

Actually its a very nice write up of the Murphy years at EMU although he graciously does not mention James Still.

Or many other EMU players from the recent past.

What's Still have to do with the 2015-16 EMU team? Unless the purpose of that article is to highlight the negative.

He did not mention that Trent Perry is, I believe, a superb student or that our transfer from a few years ago from WYO was a high caliber BIOLOGY student, something I could never be.

Kudos to mister Harrison.
Hmmmmmm, Paris Bass is playing today. If he is goes off for 20 or more points, I think we will struggle today.

Go EMU!!!

This is a rare case where Steve and I are on the same page. The write up was largely on the current team. And the point he was conveying is that there are 2 high talents on this team that would otherwise be playing for major programs had it not been for their "incidents". He went into far too much detail for my taste. But did imply these second chance scenarios are playing out well for both the players and the team. Still is not one of these cases, nor is he on the current team.

Regarding Harrison, he was a chemistry major. Just to keep the facts straight, Steve.

Did you read the article? Apparently not, there's more detailed stuff about Lee's and Thompson's "troubled" backgrounds. I'm sure you found that negative although the author is quite factual. Stills fits the same mold but a rehab project that ended up blowing up in Murphy's and the program's face. The author does give kudos to Murphy for taking chances on troubled players.

I did.

Lee and Thompson are current members of the team. Still is not.

"Yellow journalism" is bring up the past in a scurrilous way. I can say in the 5th grade I was upset with my mother, skipped school and with a 'friend' bought a pack of cigarettes with my lunch money.

However, I never skipped school again and did not smoke again, it is a bit of my past as a child...

Someone, other than me, bringing that up would be doing so in a 'scurrilous' way. It has absolutely ZERO relevance to my life today and for a number of decades (once my mother forgave me. After catching hell from the school principal, my mother and my father I NEVER skipped school again. I got straightened around in one helluva hurry.).

As Chris Matthews said on his show when he was interviewing someone whom he (Chris) thought had committed a wrong and wouldn't apologize: "We Catholics confess and move on..."

We need to move on from Still. That has been years ago...
Any thoughts on how this game will play out?

EMU has a couple decent wins against Omaha and Vermont. And their losses are somewhat reasonable, BUT they also did not perform well ENOUGH in those losses. The end margins against Oaklamd, MSU, and Penn St appear reasonable given the caliber of the opponent on the road. And this has helped EMU's standing in polls such as sagarins. The reality is, that EMU was far from victory in these games very early on. The closer end margin might have been as much the opponent reducing level of play as it was EMU maintaining level of plsy.

I wonder if EMU being favored is legitimate. Could be.
Without getting into another scheduling thread, I have NO idea how good this team is.

I'm reminded of the joke about the statistician. He is asked: "How do you feel (the poor statistician has his hands in the freezer and his feet in the oven)?" The statistician replies: "On average, I feel fine." Lol.

That is like this year's games to date. How much do we learn from MSU, L'ville, 4 non-D-I games, Coppin State? On 'average' what is this schedule? Sometimes way too difficult. Sometimes way too easy.

It is like the analogy of the freezer and oven. Toss all SEVEN of those games out because they bear no resemblance to what we'll see in the MAC. Some are too difficult. Some are too easy.

At that point, we have two average teams (Vermont and NE-Omaha) and two above average teams, Oakland and PSU. Three of those four were on the road... Oakland with Martez Walker now playing, could be much above average, a NCAA tourney team.

I'd like to suggest that UDM and N. Florida will tell us more than the previous 11 games to date because they are probably like the 'typical' mid-pack MAC team.
Different thought: Will the weather hold up?

Today is a big sports day in S.E. Michigan, including this game, Oakland's game and the Quick Lane bowl game w. CMU.

Ever wonder why folks don't show up for games? Isn't it easy to sit home and channel surf?

Steve, I know you like to ignore the program's warts and all, that isn't yellow journalism its reality. That's right we need to move from Still and we still see a trend of "second chances". Those second chances are great when they work out as appears to be the case with Thompson and Lee-so far. Regarding Lee the article doesn't mention that Lee has been sat down for using Murphy's own words "not being into it" or his six game suspension.

not trying to be negative but also not being rose colored glasses
