I mean Iowa St has a few things going for it - great fan base, game day experience, big time conference - but it's a historically tough job in a rather dull and isolated part of the country.

Agreed.

Ames may be isolated but it's really Des Moines (also isolated), which is far more economically progressive and invested than Toledo and its economy is based in the insurance and financial sectors, also more stable than manufacturing, where we are still rutted. In other words, another city doing far more with far less with the additional benefits of being a State Capital. I doubt that it's "dull."

If their social scene for their community leaders, and coaches would fall into that, is more welcoming than Toledo's, isolation probably isn't such a deal in the day to day and with that extra income, you can get where you want.

It's not a location for me but I'm not going to denigrate a place that's showing more success.

The cost of living in Toledo is more economical than in Ames. They are slightly above the US average and Toledo is quite a bit below the US average. That 150k will no longer be 150k once he goes to Ames. Housing is quite a bit cheaper here than in Ames. I too have had to think through this type of decision and you can't just make a direct apples to apples comparison.

Also consider that his wife and kids might not want to leave and that UT may throw a couple more bills on the pile to keep him here. Kinda of silly to speculate so much when we don't know all the variables. Money isn't everything if you already are making a decent living.

Your last sentence, and pono's post, hit it squarely. When I finally hit the million a year mark I was no happier than I had been making $250,000 a year. There's a point where you really don't gain quality of life.

Yessir, not to mention that the tax man will take more too! Heacock is already in the 33% bracket, so that shouldn't affect him very much either way unless he goes over the 413k or so to put him in the highest bracket. Definitely something think about as well depending on your circumstances.
Only the amount of his income that falls in the 33% bracket is taxed at 33%. This may be $10,000 or so that is exposed to 33%.
The taxes are not regressive on income. You still take more home the more you make. At no point do you take home less than if you earned less but were in a lower tax bracket.

I should qualify that by saying that has always been the case, but I have not done tax work in a long time and there have been some pretty stupid laws passed....
Heacock signed a 3 year deal in Jan 2014. $173,000 salary+$1,500 for a Bowl game appearance. If he leaves before the contract is up, $57,333 is owed to UT(1/3 salary penalty). Btw, Manning is getting $250,000 base from ISU as OC/OL Coach.

My guess is he stays. Money and family situation don't make it worth moving again.
Maybe that is the news - the offer is no longer on the table (if it ever was) and he is staying at Toledo. Probably doesn't have anything to respond to anymore.

Maybe that word wasn't there when I first read it. 03-wink. Or maybe I missed it. 03-banghead

Sounds as if they may have made him an offer he couldn't refuse. At least he stuck around until after the bowl game.
Unlike his old/new boss..

Good for him. Our defense wasn't good just because of coaching. The players made most of that happen.
Well, somebody coached up the secondary. Their play this year was pretty exceptional, particularly in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Because it played so well before he was at Toledo?

Yea, like when we gave up 66 points a game before he took over......Give me a break. Really wish he could have continued what he has started here at UT.
Best of luck Coach Heacock!!!
