Seems like Toledo might just have a half-way decent offensive coordinator, er ...head coach.
I'm liking it.
Not so fast. Dan Hawkins has 147 reasons why Temple was upset by Toledo and he slipped them all in in the last 3 minutes of 4th quarter.

Very interesting stats, though.
I am going to hunt down the next guy who criticizes Candle's OC skills.

I thought Dan Hawkins was going to sneak down to the temple sideline and provide some, um, favors to the temple qb the way he was gushing about him in the first quarter.

I do think play calling for much of the season was odd, particularly in the losses to Northern & Western, in specifically in the 2nd half of those games. BUT:

1) I think the bowl game was one of the best--maybe best?--games the Rockets have played this season in terms of clock management, use of timeouts, & getting play calls in. I don't recall once thinking "oh boy, here we go again" in that regard, and I think the only delay of game penalty we took was the intentional one before a punt.

2) While the results in the 1st quarter were pretty ugly, the intent to run the offense in a way that really minimized the impact of Temple's all-everything linebacker--even if it meant playing away from our strengths--certainly paid off down the stretch, and then in the 4th quarter, when we needed it, the run game seemed like it was averaging about 5 ypc, keeping drives alive.

I will be very curious to see if Candle hires an OC or if he chooses to retain play calling for himself. Not common nowadays.

In any event: He delivered on this early measure, not just on the offensive side of the ball but getting the team to pull together.
Play calling was excellent. We kept running for most of the game even with little success. However, that forced Temple to play a somewhat honest defense and not overplay the passing game. Finally Swanson and then Hunt began to pick up real yardage late in the game as Temple tired. It was a terrific strategy for Toledo.
The game plan on both sides of the ball appeared to be very well thought out. I think this quite possibly the best game on both sides of the ball. In a lot of games this year It looked like Candle was out thinklng him self. I'm going to miss Rocket football. Can't wait till signing day.

Maybe it wasn't Candle who was out thinking himself this season?
I agree with the last three posts. Best called game. It helped that the QB - WR connection was working, whether the problem was passing, timing or route running we'll probably never know but passes were in the runners momentum and relied more on the runs after the catch than air time. Ely will have a chance to make his case at the combines.

Defense made huge plays. Not sure how much Temple's loss of the starting RB and LB hurt them, we'd be claiming those as difference makers if they happened on our end, but our D was all over their backfield and the secondary reacted quickly.

The announcer mentioned several times, Temple's offense was not made to play from behind. Turned prophetic.
I agree the game plan was sound. Play calling was very good.

I wish Heacock (SP?) was sticking around. It was awesome to see Toledo play with a lot of passion after the first quarter. Apparently, they needed to shake something off, but after that - Wow. The D played great against a very capable Temple offense, and Cory Jones and Cody Thompson did a really nice job.

Ely deserved the MVP, but Jones, Thompson, and the defensive front were close behind. Nice job!

Juwan Woodley was named Defensive MVP for the game.

I have been critical of Candle's play calling. I thought it was much better in the bowl game. No deep balls on second and long. Didn't give up on the running game when it wasn't working, and saw the benefits of that in the second half. Loved the play action fake on the Cody Thompson TD reception.

The clock management was better than it has been at UT in at least 7 years.

An impressive debut for Candle, I am very interested to see who his hire is going to be for OC.

If your suggesting that Campbell held the OC back some won't argue that. This game played out very well.
Maybe a Heacock head coach, Candle OC was what was needed but that wasn't going to happen. Whoever didn't get head coach was headed to Ames, but only one of them was going to be willing to stay and finish what they started before leaving. All respect to Coach Heacock.

Candle is the guy making the decisions now, how he handles offensive play calling will be interesting.

Which coaching positions are still to be filled?

Dan Hawkins has no reason to like Toledo. Remember he was the head coach at Colorado when they came into the Glass Bowl during Beckman's reign and got it handed to them which I suspect only helped the Colorado AD make his decision to ax Hawkins later that year.
I was wondering whether he was the Colorado coach when we beat them. Well, a lot of experts were made to look like fools when the Rockets took down Temple.

It's pretty well known among the media that Campbell would often influence the play calling during games. He would over-ride the play call coming in at times, and would also "suggest" certain plays to Candle at crucial times in the game. Don't think he was ever able to fully separate himself from the OC position when he became the HC.
