Georgia State's football team will have a new home at Turner Field very soon. The home of the Atlanta Braves, who are leaving for a new stadium in Cobb County in 2017, will host the Panthers very soon as the school was announced on Monday as the winner of the bidding process for the stadium and surrounding land.

According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Georgia State and local real estate firm Carter have been awarded the Turner Field lot, with plans of converting the ballpark into a new football stadium.

Along with retrofitting the stadium for football, there are plans for a larger athletics complex, including a baseball stadium, as well as student housing, apartments and retail space. The estimated cost for the Georgia State-Carter plan is $300 million, according to the report.

Georgia State's football team currently plays at the Georgia Dome and will move into the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium when the Dome gets taken down after the 2016 season....
Nice. This is a game changer for Georgia St.
Congrats G State, ill be excited watching your progress.
How many seats are they going to tear out to fit GSU's attendance? 40 or 45k?

I wonder if they can configure their baseball stadium on Hank Aaron's field (currently a parking lot).
Anyone have a preliminary drawing?

That is the plan; the basepaths and outfield fence are actually marked out in their original location in what is now the parking lot for Turner Field.

I'm sure the Braves needed the parking, but it's too bad that Fulton County Stadium couldn't have been downsized and leased to Georgia State back in 1997. Likely, it still probably would have been cheaper to implode the whole thing and start from scratch than try to remove the upper deck and most of the lower bowl, and then you still would have the effects on the sight lines from it having been a multi-purpose stadium. Depending on the condition of the seating and other fixtures, there actually should be a possibility of the baseball stadium receiving some recycled items from Turner Field.

So a remodeled stadium will suddenly bring out droves of students and alumni, when the Georgia Dome couldnt. Not sure them winning will cause crowds, irrespective of the stadium.
Great news for Georgia State, congratulations to them.

They had to leave the NFL venues, this is best for all because it means instead of tearing down yet another stadium in mint condition, it gets recycled for use again. And I'd hate to lose a former Olympic Stadium.

Turner Field will essentially be an on campus stadium for them. Walking distance from the core of campus and there should be plenty of space for tailgating and such too. The atmosphere is a big part of attracting college fans.

Good news for GSU but that is a horrible stadium layout.

What is going on in Atlanta? They go through stadiums like, well, I can't even think of a good analogy. It seems like they tear down stadiums after 20 years.

If that were true, they'd be tearing down the stadium, thank goodness they aren't.

This is just a problem in major league sports in general. If it's not a revenue generating machine and full of state-of-the-art luxuries for the rich then it gets scrapped like nothing. I realize they need to be fancy to pay for the players salaries but geez it gets old. These places should last for 50 years minimum and be built with a plan for what to do with them when the stadium no longer meets league standards.

Speaking of the layout - if it is indeed to be used for track and field, that is actually more in line with the original Centennial Olympic Stadium; the end of the straightaway portion of the track is about where home plate is now, and what has been the south end zone in the renderings so far.
Nice. Congrats GSU.
Congrats to Georgia State. That's awesome.

Politicians are pretty loose with taxpayer dollars. Usually they line their own pockets.
