Quote:Louisiana-Lafayette star running back Elijah McGuire is waiting for an outside opinion before he makes a decision whether he’ll be running against Sun Belt defenders or NFL defenders next season.

Coach Mark Hudspeth said Wednesday that he met with McGuire earlier in the week and learned that McGuire is planning to submit his name to the NFL draft advisory board.

“McGuire is testing the waters,” Hudspeth said. “He’s going to … submit his name to the (NFL Draft Advisory Board). He is going to do that and evaluate that and see where he falls.”

The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the 2016 NFL draft is Jan. 18, but Hudspeth said he should hear a decision back from McGuire by the first week of the new year.

The coach isn’t planning on pressuring his best player to return for his senior season, either.

“I told him, ‘I want what’s best for you,’ ” Hudspeth said. “If it comes out to be a situation better than we expect and he’s got some guaranteed money, I’d be the first one to shake his hand.

Best of luck to him!

Is it possible that this season and the potential NCAA sanctions cause him to look at the NFL?

Anything's possible. But if you read the complete article he's by no way ruling out playing next year if he believes it'll improve his stock.

There's been a lot of talk that he's an NFL-quality running back though I think that's over-hyped. In the end he has to make the decision between some money now, a possible career-ending injury on the field in a college game, or an improvement in his overall stock by playing behind a more experienced Oline next year.

I'm betting he's back next year because I don't think the NFL is going to send a lot of positive signals.

Running backs are everywhere in the NFL. Unless you are a Todd Gurley an Adrian Peterson, you should stay your senior year.
I doubt he would project in the top 4 rounds as running backs are not "as valued" in the NFL these days as they once were. That said the sign-on in the first 3 or 4 rounds would make it worth the jump. If lower than that he is probably better off to play one more year. He's NFL quality but not that many feature RB jobs available in the NFL these days and unless exceptional they tend to go in the later rounds. He is smart to at least explore the opportunity.

Many of us don't see him as a feature back in the NFL. Not a bruiser at all; but definitely a change of pace, receiver out of the backfield, or even a slot receiver type player. That type player can be found in later rounds, or even free agency.
Given his injuries recently, and "modest" numbers this year; I really don't see him projecting high enough to warrant going this year. But he is doing the right thing and trying to see where he stands. Would love to see him back in the Cajun uniform next year; but wish him well regardless. 04-cheers

Earlier rankings had him as the #15 RB in the 2017 draft, but that's a long time off from now. He played this year at less than full health and I think he's worried about having most of his carries being between the tackles again next year. It makes sense to get an idea of where you are, and if it's not good, come back to school. I still think he's a slot guy in the NFL as I think he's our best receiver right now.

Let's just hope our coach doesn't run him into the ground again next year if he does return. I suspect part of his decision could be knowing "how" he will be used next year if he comes back for his senior season.

I disagree, if you are a running back and can get any money out of the draft, you should do that immediately. You've only got so many carries in your career. For example, I expect Derrick Henry's draft stock to drop at the end of the season when he will have nearly 400 carries.

That's another reason I would suggest Elijah as a slot receiver.
It's a smart move either way...gets his name out there amongst scouts and teams, he will learn what teams thinks he needs to work on etc. I don't think anything is wrong in gauging where the interest is. If I were him, I would have a long discussion with Hud about getting more passes out of the backfield and out wide like the previous 2 years. That is where he will make his money in the NFL... He is more like a Westbrook, Sproles, Harvin type guy that you would move around and get in space.
I would like to see him with the Panther's as the type of back that Fozzy Whitaker is. Fozzy knows how to "get skinny", but overall he lacks the ability to avoid being tackled by using force. I feel that McGuire could do that.

Beat me to it. RBs have a short NFL career compared to other positions. If he would get drafted he should go. Same for any backs in any league.
I don't blame him at all. One bad play and youre done with football. Get the money when you can.
