Reading info about the ECU ferver for PJ I ran across this:

http://www.fayobserver.com/sports/colleg...7db80.html

This part is hilarious:

Quote:More importantly, he staged a remarkable turnaround at Western, improving the record from 1-11 in 2013 to 8-5 in 2014.

Uhhhh... Didn't PJ manufacture that beauty (1-11) season? I'm assuming the ECU powers that be did at least that much homework. Don't get me wrong, I am quite happy with PJ at this point, but acting like he pulled us out of a 1 win team is hilarious!
He took that awful team he inherited went 1-11 and then TURNED THEM AROUND TO THE PERRENIAL BOWL APPEARING team they are now.

He'd make a better pirate than Johnny Depp! 02-13-banana
A lot of catchy angles for Peej to work with.

"Men, we're going to board their boat, take their treasure, and rape their women! Let's gooooo!!!"
He inherited a 4 win team that was, unfortunately trending downwards. It would be curious indeed to see what Cubit would have done with the team that season. He couldn't have done worse, record wise, but Im not sure that year we were going to do well regardless.

Perhaps the question should be, is the football program in better shape right now, in terms of the here and now, but more importantly for the near future, than it would be if we kept Cubit. I really liked Cubit as our coach. Our program was very decent, and honestly, if we kept him for another ten years we would have probably had some real good years and some average years. I was saddened when he was let go. But at the same time I understood why he was let go. The program had been getting stale, and frankly Cubit had made some decisions that were head scratchers.

The nice thing about time is that it answers a lot of questions. Fleck will either have a good season next year or he wont. If it is real good, then we will have an unofficial winner between the ProFlecks vs. AntiFlecks. If it is bad, we still will have a winner.

That four win team was leading in the fourth quarter in six of their eight losses. Depth was an issue due to injuries.
Tally six more moral victories to the 2012 season, please.

It's a bottom line business, who is responsible for depth and losing fourth-quarter leads?

Good, reasoned, post. Cubit is a good man, and a decent coach, but clearly was not going to lead WMU to a championship. He had his time and his chances.

Whether PJ is the man to take the Broncos to the proverbial "next level," remains to be seen. However, it has become obvious that the program currently is in better shape than it was left by Cubit. In Cubit's defense, he did not have the resources PJ has.

Bottom-line, like him or not, PJ Fleck is the head football coach at Western Michigan University. He has beaten CMU two straight and tied for first in the MAC West Division by beating a ranked Toledo team AT Toledo.

And WMU is going to a bowl for the 2nd consecutive year for the first time ever.

There is plenty to be proud of in Bronco land, regardless of petty, middle-schoolish, personal differences with Fleck.

Same guy who is responsible for the < .500 record the last three years, the HC.

...which doesn't mean squat historically when you consider that now 80 of 128 D-I schools are going to "bowls."

That's analogous to NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament taking 200 teams instead of 68.

True, although basketball comes a lot closer when you factor in NIT/CBI/CIT. Much easier to claim a postseason bid these days in bball too.

Good point. Also 20-win seasons in hoops don't mean as much as when regular season was 24 or even 27 games.

Yep, comparing coaches' bowl productions is a moot point due to the ever changing landscape.

Molde would've gone to 6(!) consecutive bowls if this year's system was in place then. Nowadays, by saying you went to two bowls in a row is synonymous with saying you went two consecutive years without a losing season (and even Nebraska couldn't say that).

Cubit got us to 3. But over an 8 year span in the two-thousand aughts, that'd be just "ok."

Attending bowls is a moot point these days. But since they persist.....
I see them more like the old hoops Bracketbuster late season games. Kind of a fun OOC game (unless you are the Mountain West in Arizona) with pairing of decent-or-better teams. Certainly not the elite prize it once was, no pun intended.

Hated the 1-bid days though. 9 and 10 win teams sitting home. I think 4 bowls for a 12 team MAC would be good: Two MACC participants guaranteed, plus two "at large."

Well, you can either highlight the positives and build on them, or obsess on the negatives and let them bring you down.

To any objective observer, WMU football has more positives than negatives at this moment. The past is behind us. Let it go.

I am proud of what is being accomplished, and am pleased for our players. I look forward to watching them in the Bahamas Bowl and am encouraged for next season.

If others want to be sullen and sarcastic about the few negatives and compound them with falsehoods and fabrications, that reflects more on their character than Western Michigan University football.

Go Broncos! 04-cheers
