Should the Sun Belt and/or other G5 conferences push to be able to start and end the season earlier since their bowl games are scheduled earlier than most of the P5 bowels?
I just realized that most of the Sun Belt teams had about 2 (maybe 3) weeks notice of which bowls they would be attending. 2 weeks isn't bad but more time would be better. Do you think the NCAA would allow the Sun Belt or G5 conferences to be able to start a week earlier? I know some DII and even a FCS game are typically shown that weekend, but could be a nice for more G5 TV exposure. They could even setup a G5 challenge weekend if they wanted.
So is it a good idea or a bad idea? Is it even possible / conceivable?
I think the NCAA mandates the start of the season.
Panther fans will correct me if I'm wrong but they had to petition to play on Wednesday against Abilene Christian.

I know the NCAA mandates the start of the season - the question is would trying to get the G5 schools to petition the NCAA in order to start a week earlier make sense? The main argument is that the bowls are much earlier than the post Christmas bowls many of the P5 enjoy.
One of the reasons it's so long is because of Hawaii and any school playing there gets 13 games. The season is 14 weeks already with us starting in August some years. CCGs pushes it to 14 also. We had 2 byes this season. If you back it up they have to back up practices to even earlier and a lot of players (from what little I know of TXST) take summer classes. Some JUCOs or guys trying to get their entry requirements in order don't get word until very late in July.
In the past 4 years, 2 of our first games were last weekend in August. It's also unbearably hot that time of year down here.
There's a ton load of games. They have to spread them out somehow. Not like when I was a kid and they were almost all played within a weeks' timeframe.
Yes, I'm that old

I understand all of the points you make, but don't see them being an issue. So do you think its a bad idea? The main benefit / advantage in my mind would allow more time between the end of the season and a CCG and the bowl games. Plus, if you can make it G5 only then you have a lot more exposure.
I don't see an extra "hot" game being a big deal - that's why we have night games. I know for Coastal it would likely be better attended than a late season game that may be cold.

Yes and Yes
NCAA mandates start but not finish. We finished Dec 5 by choice
No. Just arrange a bowl to be played after Christmas. Easier said than done now a days with the CPF era, but bowls setup the dates for their benefit.

The bowl dates are driven by TV availability / revenue. I don't think the lower bowls will be able to move the dates as they would be killing their revenue. I think it would be easier to start earlier since there would be more TV airtime, thus revenue.

YES . . .
Just MO, but the NCAA is not likely to move the start of the college football season back to accommodate the lowly G5. . . . .

Nope. ESPN sets the date for the bowls. We've been through this with Go Daddy. They were forced to move to December by the playoff, and the only slot ESPN would televise them is Dec 23
Bowl game start times have always been at the whim of the TV networks.

From a player and coach stand point I'd say 2 weeks is plenty of time to get ready for any game. You might have an injury or two that would benefit from more time though. I think having more time would really benefit the fans who will be attending the bowl game to get reservations and all. It's hard to go more than a couple of weeks without playing a game.

Completely agree. A few injuries might heal with extra time and teh fans would benefit, but lengthy lay-offs tend to result in sloppy bowl games. A longer delay can be a major momentum killer for a team that finishes a season strong.
Frankly by us having a season game on conference championship week, it puts all Sun Belt coaches behind a week in recruiting. There were only 2 Big 12 games other than conference championship games. So we, as a conference, lost a week on the recruiting trail to every one else. Add to that the Sun Belt bowl tie ins begin as soon as the 19th, if you were rewarded with a bowl, proper game prep would also cut into that. Not to mention the whole, students have finals this week at most schools. I'd hate for any student athletes to be disqualified due to lack of preparation for finals.
Two weeks is fine
