my opinion - they already decided long ago....

In some ways yes. NMSU had another shot at full membership last year. I think there is one more chance for them, along with EKU, Liberty, UTC, and perhaps even JMU.

My guess at this point is both get extended a couple more years as we will finally decide to hold a championship game now that we can form two football divisions. The fact we have a more compact divisional footprint will draw interest from schools in the east to join. If I were to bet: both given a 1-2 year extension and during that span, NMSU finally gets in, and a new team is added to the east leaving Idaho not renewed. A second scenario puts two all sports football schools in the footprint and both football only schools are not renewed. A third and least likely scenario has us keeping Idaho and NMSU football, and adding two in the east. I hold little hope for that as every dollar counts in the SBC.

I just don't see anyone in our west footprint that everyone would vote for except MSU... And they really seem to have no interest. I could see UTC, EKU (should they correct thier funding, support, and stadium issues) and yes, even Liberty getting another look. I'd think coastal may be a yes vote on Liberty. JMU could finally get thier act together and make it look like it was thier plan all along, but that's the least likely.

This all seems reasonable to me. As an Idaho fan, I'd be happy with one more extension to 2019. If we haven't figured out something more permanent by then we need to reevaluate what we're doing.

In the meantime, I appreciate the opportunity the Belt gave us to rebuild our program in relative stability. Whatever happens, we're in a lot better shape now than we were in 2 years ago.
I would like to see UTC, though that would add another team relatively close to Alabama and is not something I am keen on as I'm not a huge fan of half of our bowl tie-in's being in that state. I would like to see JMU or EKU added to influence a bowl being created in Charleston.
Is JMU even a possibility? Don't get me wrong, I think they would be a great addition but I don't see it happening.

I don't think so. I think they've dug themselves into a hole so deep and now they won't be able to get out of it.

Charleston Bowl is already created.

In that case, give them a decent pick so we or Southern don't have to worry about going to Alabama again if both are eligible next season. Though i'm not a huge fan of it being held at the Citadel's stadium. I love Charleston but there have to be other places for the game to be played.

What is puzzling to me is that they pour all the money into the program under the illusion of moving up to FBS, and then don't make the jump when given the chance. In a way this could be seen as fraud if they were collecting more donations based on the belief that they would accept an invitation, when they had no actual plans of doing so.

It's going to be tough to keep up with Liberty gaining more ground financially, and ODU being relatively successful their first two seasons in C-USA.

That and adding JMU and Coastal while dropping Idaho and NMSU would add to quality programs, one of which would almost assuredly compete right away in most sports. (JMU) Overall I believe that would leave the conference better off than C-USA if Louisiana returns to form in the next season or two.

All good points and why I think a year or two from now JMU COULD finally come over to the SBC. They are getting lapped by former peers, they are keeping one eye open on AppState and seeing home games against Miami and Wake. They seeing 10 win seasons and bowls. But now with Coastal and two divisions, they actually have cover to come back and re-evaluate the SBC. Having said all that: the issue under everything with JMU is money. Money. I've said it for the last two years. They talk footprints and academics, but it's declining attendance and lack of donations. There is a small grassroots effort to gather contributions that will only be paid once JMU accepts a conference invite from an FBS league. If it has time time to grow, it could be a factor. So,while I think it's pretty low probability now, things might change in a few years.

I'd rather us not add anymore no-names until the conference has time to build up some rep. at least nmsu is a familiar name and the #2 team in their state not the 5th or 6th..maybe encourage Idaho to find a more geographically favorable conference and get nmsu all in. with east/west divisions, the eastern schools would not have to travel.
I have heard for several months since Coastal was added that NMSU and Idaho will be exited after 2017. Here at Ga Southern I am now hearing that may not happen, at least in 2017

Who are you hearing this from? Someone who knows the AD? Or just some guy using a screen name on the internet message boards like the rest of us?
From athletic department people. 2 months ago it seemed certain they would be gone after 2017. Now it seems they have gained some support from some schools to at least extend them thru 2019.
We ll see in March. This is just from Ga Southern. I have no idea what the feeling is at other schools.
I still have not heard a definitive answer to what it will take to extend or expel them. Do 9 of 11 have to vote to extend them 2 more years or do 9 of 11 have to vote to expel them after 2017?

Any chance we may see NMSU extended to 2019 and Idaho dropped in 2017?

According to arkstfan, who seems generally to know what he's talking about on this stuff, it's a simple majority vote. A majority vote among which members, I don't know -- I'm sure NMSU & Idaho don't have votes, but do UTA & UALR?

Cool, thanks.
