Some of the Biggest Buyouts

$18.9 million (Charlie Weis) Notre Dame
Remaining Buyout: two annual payments of $2,054,744
The Fighting Irish have already paid Weis more than $14.8 million not to coach, including an initial payment of about $6.6 million.

$7.9 million (Bo Pellini)
Remaining Buyout: 46 monthly payments of $132,176
FCS program Youngstown State will pay Pelini $213,894 to coach its team this year; Nebraska will pay him $1.59 million not to coach the Cornhuskers.

$7.5 million (Gene Chizik)
Remaining Buyout: Eight monthly payments of $200,000
The Tigers paid more than $12.5 million in buyouts for the past two head coaches they ran off -- Chizik and Tommy Tuberville ($5.083 million).

$6.3 million (Will Muschamp)
Remaining Buyout: Two annual payments of $2.1 million
Muschamp will be paid $2.1 million from Florida and $1.6 million as Auburn's defensive coordinator. His $3.7 million salary would have been more than what all but 12 Power 5 head coaches were paid last year.

$5.625 million (Charlie Weis) Kansas
Remaining Buyout: 19 monthly payments of $200,893
Weis earned about $2.1 million for each of his six victories at Kansas -- including wins over South Dakota, South Dakota State and Southeast Missouri State.

$5.5 million (Jeff Tedford)
Remaining Buyout: Seven monthly payments of $198,000
Cal's buyout to Tedford would have been reduced only if he'd accepted another coaching job that paid more than $1.5 million annually.

$5 million (Derek Dooley)
Remaining Buyout: 18 monthly payments of $104,167
With the buyout alone, the Volunteers paid an average of $1.25 million for their four SEC victories during his three-year tenure.

$3 million (Brady Hoke)
Remaining Buyout: 19 monthly payments of $125,000
Including his buyout and the $1 million paid to San Diego State to buy out his contract there, the Wolverines paid Hoke more than $15 million to coach four seasons.

$2.75 million (Mack Brown)
Remaining Buyout: Three annual payments of $687,500
Brown also received a one-year job as special assistant to UT president Bill Powers with a $500,000 salary.

$2.5 million (Skip Holtz)
Remaining Buyout: Three annual payments of $500,000
The Bulls gave Holtz a three-year extension in July 2012 -- then fired him about five months later, costing the school an additional $1.5 million in the buyout.

$2.1 million (Ellis Johnson)
Remaining Buyout: One annual payment of $333,000
According to Deadspin.com, Southern Miss sold its 2013 home opener against Nebraska (moving it to Lincoln) for $2.1 million -- the same amount the Golden Eagles owed Johnson for firing him.

So if Rice announces that the team is playing @Baylor again in 2016, we will know why...?

How would Parliament react to selling a game to pay off Bailiff?

Id applaud it.

Frankly, that was a very clever move by Southern Miss. Its not like Bailiff is capable of beating Baylor, so we lose ancillary revenue and ticket sales but gain a payoff; and we get a loss either way.

Personally, I would react very favorably.

With a mixture of outrage, sophistry, hyperbole, and pedantry. And wry humor.

I would be torn. I want bigger games and crowds at HRS.

I agree, but this is a case of lose the battle to win the war.

Imagine if we had 35k fans in HRS watching Rice get beaten to a pulp by Baylor- that would be the end of crowds at HRS for next season. No one would come back.
I know that I am probably in the minority, but I don't like the idea. 2006 had @UCLA, Texas @ Reliant, and @ Florida State in successive weeks. We were a considerable underdog headed into Army @ West Point after losses to UH, UCLA, UT, and FSU. It took several miracles and close games that year to get to the New Orleans Bowl. The Cardiac Owls, the Cinderella Owls they said, and they were right. It isn't worth putting this team or a new coach behind the 8-ball like that for one more year of Bailiff.

How is the situation any different playing Baylor at HRS versus in Waco?

It's likely t be a lopsided loss in either location.

This.

We're going to lose - Bailiffs 9 years guarantees that. May as well get paid in the process
Weis is currently collecting two separate buyouts, for a total of about $4.4m a year?

Nice work if you can get it.

But who's going to hire him in the future?
Will he be able to survive on a mere $18.9 million?

Rice hired Greenspan. Somehow I think Weis could find someone dumb enough to hire him again.

Baylor at Rice or Rice at Baylor is unlikely to change the outcome of that game. 6 Bear turnovers for points might, but not location. However, I don't think that merely changing the location of the game would produce a big enough bump in pay for the purpose discussed. I meant it would be unwise to sell another game, i.e. adding North Carolina (who has two FCS schools on their schedule) and dropping Prairie View for 2016.
FYI...Rice has sold a home game before. In the last 2 years of Arkansas in the SWC we were scheduled to play at Little Rock the next to last year and at home the last year. We sold our home game and had to listen to the crap about Arkansas going to the SEC for two straight years in the Hills.
Oops...misread / misinterpreted "buyout". (Sorry.)

Yeah, that screwed us so badly that we went to our first bowl in 45 years.

I'd move the game to get a bigger payout, whether we make a coaching change or not.

I disagree. I like JK's plan of having 6 home games every year. Need to start giving fans a reason to come to Rice Stadium, even if it is to see our opponent. I would be OK with it for a single-season if that is what is needed to upgrade the coaching staff. But I wouldn't want to do it just for the $$$.
