Full Version: Rather Useless Auburn Game Statistics

Some useless stats from http://www.sports-reference.com:

-Since 2010 (since that is as far back as the site goes) there hasn't been a game where a team has taken 57 2 point field goal attempts or more, the opponent has fouled them 19 or more times, and that team only had 11 or less free throws attempted.

-The game last night was likely the most lopsided foul shot discrepancy in at least the past 4 years as well. I couldn't find a single game where two teams were within 1 foul difference of each other and one team took 20 or more free throw attempts than the other. The closest I could find was about a 3 or 4 foul difference. Most of the more lopsided ones within 1 foul were about 15 or less attempts difference and even those were rather rare.

Crazy.
Also,

In the last 4 years, UAB Basketball had not lost to Auburn until last Friday.
In games that we have lost we have been outscored.

I blame Ingram.
He was there........... :-)

I was too. We didn't get cheated. We got outplayed and out coached. We fouled them in the act of shooting and that was mostly due to lazy, didn't come ready to play defense. I knew many Blazer fans were going to make this excuse if we lost...they always do. We ran our mouths for months about how good we were. Now we can either learn from this, get better and move forward or moan and ***** and blame others.

I was there too, and the refs were inconsistent at best. When stats like that are posted, it is something you have to at least consider. We were banging in the paint all night and getting no calls. They were getting calls anytime we got near them when they drove to the basket.

Yeah I agree with what you're saying for the most part. Most of the team didn't come to play. They seemed soft and timid. However, when there is a clear statistical anomaly like the OP showed, you have to admit it influenced the game outcome in some way.

There was a clear push in the back of cokley on one of his few misses late in the second half. We rebounded pretty well and got very few calls on any put backs or shots around the basket. The total foul numbers were fair, but the way the game was called was weird and not consistent for both teams.

Despite the free throws, The reason we lost was only about a third of our team came to play. Coach also has his errors to account for. I didn't like a lot of the substitutions and minute distributions. I didn't like that he didn't call a timeout in the first half when the crowd was erupting and we were clearly rattled. I didn't like that we ran so much time off the block before calling a TO before the last play. I'm also pretty sure we left a time out unused, which I thought should have been called with about 5-6 seconds on the clock when we still had possession. The play was clearly broken at that point..
ALSO - didn't like that cokley was taken out late in the game. I think the score was tied at that point and we went into a scoring drought until our late push (when, not surprisingly, cokley was back in). I felt he should've been given a 1-2 minute real time rest, if he absolutely needed it, and then been put back in ASAP. We left him on the bench way too long. He didn't look gassed to me, either..

Some curious decisions made by coach for sure..

Lots of things to improve on, but I see a deep and talented team that didn't give up or fold when they played pretty lackluster for
Most of the game. A lot of our issues are effort related. That can be cleared up quickly. There's no huge personnel issues that we have. Coach will figure out the substitutions and minutes. We played in the most hostile environment we will all season (why can't bartow look like that, btw??). I remain confident.

I agree that it looked like it was a mistake to take Cokley out when he was taken out, but in looking at the Play by Play, we were down three points when he went out. Cokley had played about six or seven minutes at that point, which at the high level of energy he was playing, is a lot. Haase usually subs out players after four or five minutes. He went out after he committed his third foul. Also, while he was out, which was only about two minutes, Auburn outscored us 2-0.

I will agree that him leaving seemed to kill some momentum, but it did not kill us. We took the lead (our only lead) after he took his break, so him coming out did not affect the outcome. I suspect he was gassed.

The playby play where he went out.

Because Auburn gave the students the best seats. A necessary thing to get their arena to look full for TV on a Thursday night.

When you have something like this where you cannot even find another game that was called in this extreme of a manner in any other NCAA game it still makes you think.

Was Auburn really just that much better at not fouling on shots and we were incredibly poor in comparison (to the point where no other team has had a game called like this against them?) or were we just incredibly unlucky in the calls we got? All fouls are not created equal

Look we should have won the game and overcome some questionable officiating. We have no one to blame but ourselves. We have been on the other side getting those calls and no calls and it evens itself out. Yea a pressing team shooting 21 more free throws does make you scratch your head but it was the no calls that hurt worse IMHO. It's done, it's over. Let's all move on and have a great season. The fact we played so poorly and still should have won should be encouraging. That loss stings pretty bad but it's over. We have a tough opponent tonight and we need everyone there.

I still think this will be a special season and am excited about ASU, another Sack of Troy and the ECC.

BTW we will be gathering at Floyds at FWB for some food and spirits. I'll nail down time later.

That is exactly what has kept me confident after suffering such a disheartening loss. The team didn't play up to snuff, and was clearly rattled by the atmosphere, at least in the beginning of the game. The only player who really played his A game was Cokley. We had a crazy foul shot discrepancy go against us. With all that being said, we came an inch away from winning a game that we had no business winning. Furthermore, the team continually kept fighting, making come backs, and never gave up. All of those things are very encouraging to me. This was also the first game of the season in the most hostile environment we will play in all year. If we are still playing like this in a few weeks, I will be concerned. For now, though, I remain confident and will stay on the cliff rather than jumping off of it. I think we are still a really good team and can have a special year.

and Pearl didn't put scrubs out on the floor. The freshman were highly touted. Sunshine was the only outlier I noticed.
