...here, in no specific order, are things I really liked about the CMU game:

1) It was a win. After that debacle against Northern, it started to look like we may have another meltdown. Credit to the team for pulling the win out.

2) Watching Hunt run the best he has all season (limited though it has been for him).

3) To be fair, a couple of Ely's passes--the long one to Johnson and the long one to Russell--were on the money. Very pretty throws, and nice catches on the other end, as well.

4) Campbell giving Vest a last shot at a FG. Showed confidence in him. He (we) need that. The conditions at BG make it an unfriendly place for many visiting kickers, and the WMU game may end up being a huge game. Vest needs to get re-oriented quickly--those were 2 bad misses--and Campbell tried to give him that chance.

5) Defensively, I thought we got more pressure on the QB, even if it wasn't always fruitful, than we have in quite a few games.
The kicks appeared to be straight, unfortunately straight gown the field from the snap location and wide both times. At least he is not hooking them, I think that would be a bigger issue to correct.

Correctable mistakes on his misses. Hope he gets his mental edge and confidence back, he's a real good kicker!!!!

Both misses were from the right hash.

I also believe (I could be wrong) that the miss late in the NIU game was from the right hash as well. (can someone confirm?)

so he is kicking them straight, coaching staff must to be aware of ball placement when setting up a field goal.

Looks to me, he needs to adjust his angle of approach a little from the right hash.
Why is Jones-Moore not playing? He is good in the wildcat and he scores touchdowns. In the UMass game he was terrific in the second half when he was fresh and the defense was tired.

Great Question!!!!!!!!!!

I'm wondering it, too.

Always looking for that silver lining.....
Hunt commented that he was really feeling himself in this game. I think he meant he was feeling like the Hunt from last year and it showed at times, especially on the punishing last TD drive. At least I hope that's what he meant.

Ely has to become more consistent with his accuracy. Even though he made some nice throws tonight, many were either high or late. Moving forward if teams stop our run game we could be in trouble, I would assume both BG and Western will make Ely win the game for us. Drops weren't as big an issue last night as they were in previous games. And scheme wise our receivers are open the majority of the time.

Unfortunately, BG's maligned defense seems to be improving rapidly. I was hoping we could keep it on the ground and grind out 300 yards rushing but looks like they're doing a pretty good job of stopping the run. We'd probably just throw 50 times anyway.

Not really, they went through a stretch of playing a series of teams with little to no rushing offense - UB, Mass, Akron, KSU. Even so, UB and UA had decent running games against BG. Ohio on the other hand ran for 300 yards against them last week. So, it remains to be seen how much their run D has improved.
The defensive pressure was a huge factor in Rush completing 61.5% of his passes; he came into the game completing almost 70%. Also, he was forced to throw shorter passes than normal. It was good to see the defense get a couple of sacks. Have to remember, Cooper Rush is an outstanding QB, ranked second in the MAC. The defense made the Chips a very one-dimensional team; they rushed for just 59 yards on 20 carries. The secondary was in position to make three INTs. Thankfully, third time was a charm to end the game. Cheatham Norrils had an outstanding game; the two PI calls, IMO, were really weak. His smile said it all on the second call.

Phillip Ely had a better QB proficiency rating (145.3) than Rush (129.5). Credit Ely with handling multiple low snaps from center. Why this continues to be a problem is something I really don't understand. The offense played well enough to win even though they left 20 points on the field with missed TD passes to open receivers and field goals. The receivers dropped just two passes IIRC. Sixteen of the 23 completions went for first downs (almost 70%)! Receivers were getting open, in many cases, beyond the marker!

Please, some one tell me that Nick Ellis left the rugby punt in Mt Pleasant. On third down and long in the red zone, please get the ball to the center of the field off the right hash mark! Finally, rushing the ball 35 times (for 168 yards) needs to be increased. Putting up 200 yards rushing should be a base line for this offense.

I think OU's QB played a major role in the Bobcats' rushing yardage.

As frustrating as Russell's inconsistency can be at times, I have to give him credit for his play yesterday. He made some nice catches, and had a very solid game.

Agree completely. Zo's play coming into the Central game would not make third team All-MAC status. There are a ton of WRs having much better years in this league. He's got two more games to move up. That would be extremely helpful for this team.

I was referring to ball placement for field goal attempts.

Couldn't believe that after two awful rugby-style kicks he tried a third, albeit modified, rugby kick. For me that is a coaching error. As for the low snaps it's a good news/bad news thing- good that Ely handles then so efficiently, bad that he has had to learn how to handle bad snaps so efficiently.
I'm as puzzled about the rugby style punts as anything else that happened. Take away the one 9 yard punt against NIU, which was rugby style, and Nick Ellis is the star of that game, hands down. Last night? I don't remember any non-rugby style punts and I don't think any of them were any good at all.
