Here's how the chess match plays out:

B10 strongly rumored to expand along East Coast and maybe Texas.

SEC offers Texas.

Texas has competing offer from B10 (w Oklahoma) and P12 (Texhoma 6). Texas chooses stand alone offer from SEC bc of "little brother issues" (OK ST) and desire to be in close eastern conglomerate.

SEC preemptively offers GT, Dook, UNC, UVA.

GT is a blocker, keeping B10 outta Georgia and putting crimp into B10 eastern seaboard plans.
GT immediately accepts.
UNC/Dook/UVA go into tank, compare competing B10 offer. They flip a coin and choose SEC. Backup plan was FSU/NC State/VT.

B10 offers Syracuse, BC, Kansas, Mizzou. All accept. SYR/BC fill out northeast, Kansas is a national brand, Mizzou partly so B10 can flex and steal an SEC team.

SEC and B10 stop at 18 each.

Big Atlanic B12/ACC merger finalizes shortly thereafter...

West:
OK, OSU, TCU, TT, Bay, K-St, ISU

East:
FSU, Mia, Clem, NCSU, Wake, VT, Lville, WV, Pitt (1 East team rotates into West for 2 year cycle).

Notre Dame gets grandfathered ACC deal.

B10, SEC, and Big Atlantic continue using divisions. BUT...

They operate each division as its own sub-conference. Inter-divisional games count as OOC games only.

CFP grows to 8, with top 6 + 2 G5 at large.

CSN ponders when evbdy will expand to 20.

Final tally 18, 18, 16, 12. No legacy P5 team can be demoted under threat of legislation.
Fairly plausible. I enjoy reading scenarios like this.

I'm not sure that GaTech would be the "blocker" though. Yes, it's quite a drive from Michigan to Georgia...but the academic affiliation is pretty important. That said, by bringing UNC/Duke/UVA with them to the SEC, now the SEC has some serious academic funding (along with Georgia/Florida/Vandy). So maybe GaTech would block that deal.

But...if UNC/Duke/UVA all said they wanted Big Ten...GaTech's hand might be forced. The tail might not wag the dog then. They might need to follow the much bigger dollars in the Big Ten (TV plus academics...all pointing towards a major boost over the SEC).

Except for the fact that the Big 10 doesn't add to anyone's research dollars, just to their ability to coordinate research in an attempt to land grant money. North Carolina, Virginia and Duke don't need that kind of coordination because they already have that. And, right now, until the next Big 10 TV contract is negotiated, you are behind the SEC in TV revenue, if only slightly.

Given the present chaotic economy, up and down dramatically on little factual impetus, maybe the Big 10 gets a big payout when they renegotiate, or maybe they don't. We'll see.

Admit it!

Oh go on now Captain!

No peace in our time! Once more unto the breach!

The college football world is built to run on North v South and we all love it.
The CEO of the Big Ten Network was quoted is a biz article that they are looking West.

Well...., that would make room for Duke in the SEC.

That is to say, the network is looking west, not necessarily the conference. The point of the article was that Big Ten alumni are everywhere in large numbers, and you don't necessarily have to have a team in your conference that's in a given market in order to get subscribers to your network.
Must be a slow day for you, OP.

Correct me if wrong, BTN gets to types of carriage fees one where they have a U and a lower one where they do not have a U. I guess I read it wrong then.

Yeah, but those rates are negotiable. And, even if they're presented as one number, it's a weighted average.

If the B1G added a SUNY Stony Brook, the per school conference payout would fall, even though SUNY SB is in Long Island, close to the city. The same goes for adding Boston University, even though it's in downtown Boston.

Contrary to what many believe, geography is meaningless. Fans are what matters, and I don't think that there are any schools in the east with large fan bases that are interested in the B1G. Additionally, I don't think that PSU's eyes are as wandering as they were.

By "blocker" I mean that B10 may not wna grab FSU on an island without a Georgia property as a link, so they would potentially have to jump from NC to FL. I think it's worth having FSU, even if they're on an island, but B10 may find that off putting.
