Blazer ID discusses new leadership, basketball season and football recruiting

Our gold "Birmingham" throwback uniforms were not shown. Just to clarify any confusion, we consider these to be extremely special to both our program and community. They have absolutely not gone away, and you just never know when they might show up!
Quote:In related news, we held media day for our basketball programs last week and unveiled our new uniforms. The players in both locker rooms were excited to see the new look and proud to represent UAB. Our gold "Birmingham" throwback uniforms were not shown. Just to clarify any confusion, we consider these to be extremely special to both our program and community. They have absolutely not gone away, and you just never know when they might show up!

Damn. Everybody will have to find something besides this to blame him for.
As usual, our "fans" overreacted. Coach Haase makes a million dollars a year. He'll feature the Birmingham jerseys when we he damn well pleases.
That's a good letter.

He could've quashed all doubt by saying that up front when the uniforms were shown instead of w/ this release as it comes out as PR dept putting in OT to recover from the backlash.
I doubt they put in much overtime.

This poor guy. I'm sure the "Birmingham" jerseys are not favored by many on the BOT (no separate identity you know), so he was told not a good idea. After many calls, he backed up. And he (or those PR firm dudes) did a good job of phrasing it, the truth remains. He has no f'ing idea what is going on.

What backlash?

Remember, for every idiot on this board (including all of us) bitching about it, there are 15 calling or emailing his office. That backlash.

Nick Saban will feature what he damn well pleases. Coach Haase isn't even a house hand on the BOT plantation. Pure field hand.
I guess we should all keep in mind that Ingram is new as an AD and there are bound to be mis-steps along the way. Much like a first-time head coach there are growing pains. While the head coach learns he is measured by wins and losses. Ingram's wins and losses may very well take the form of good and bad media- and public relations-related episodes.

"(UAB athletic director Mark Ingram) had called me and asked me to make sure UAB is what it said on all uniforms," Haase said. "That's my understanding. That's the directive from Mark to me."

For someone who makes a million dollors, he sure takes directions good. Don't let the money fool you, even the great saban bows down to those cowards on the bot.

"That's above my pay grade" ~ Nick Saban
The facts are:
-Birmingham jerseys were popular last season and worn for many home games beginning with the LSU game and throughout the C-USA tournament.

-The athletic department gave away gold Birmingham t-shirts to all attendees at the summer hoops dinner.

-From al.com article about the lack of "Birmingham" jerseys at media day:
Quote:"(UAB athletic director Mark Ingram) had called me and asked me to make sure UAB is what it said on all uniforms," Haase said. "That's my understanding. That's the directive from Mark to me."

Ingram confirmed that message to AL.com, noting all uniforms will have UAB on it for branding purposes.

"Our university, which is UAB, spends a lot of resources promoting that as a brand," Ingram said. "We are no different trying to promote our brand as a national brand and our brand nationally, which is UAB, is pretty strong.

"We want to keep consistency throughout all our uniforms. You'll see that on all our uniforms. That's who we are, we're UAB."

-From the same article:
Quote:Ingram did add that, "I'm not in the business of saying never or always on anything." He compared the situation to UCLA, noting that the school always brands UCLA and not "Los Angeles" on its team apparel.

-From AD Ingram's most recent e-mail:
Quote:Our gold "Birmingham" throwback uniforms were not shown. Just to clarify any confusion, we consider these to be extremely special to both our program and community. They have absolutely not gone away, and you just never know when they might show up!

There was an issue, it has been clarified, and hopefully we can move on.
Sorry MB, no overreaction at all. This being stated now is just a PR move due to the outlash about them stating they were moving away from the Birmingham jerseys completely. Believe what you want but my earlier thoughts about this issue were heavily influenced by what I was told by people on campus. Our leadership at UAB never seem to think situations through or just think we won't notice them. Then when we do we react in spin control mode. As one professor recently told me "We have to be the most reactionary educational institution in the country." This was just another example.
They are pushing & pushing & pushing to see what they can get away with before being pushed back against.

License plates, football, benefits, etc.
I get both sides of this issue. UAB has been trying to build a nationally & internationally recognized brand. We as fans have fought for decades to get people to refer to us as UAB, not Alabama-Birmingham, not UA-Birmingham.

Now that we have the country's attention with the death and resurrection of UAB football and gained Cinderella status with basketball, we are going into defense-mode over UAB being on our jerseys?

Demonizing "UAB" jerseys isn't a road I want to go down. We did our job as supporters calling out Ingram for clarification on the jersey issue. We'll wait & see when the Birmingham jerseys appear this season.
