Phillip Ely was the 20th ranked pro style QB coming out of high school. He originally went to Alabama. He's a 5th year senior.

Ryan Graham had 1 offer coming out of high school, and I'm not even sure that's true. He might have been a walk-on. He's a freshman whose only real playing time was a pick against CMU.

Ely:
15/33, 136 yards, 1 TD, 2 INT

Graham:
9/12, 132 yards, 1 TD, 0 INT

Stop talking about recruiting rankings. They're irrelevant.

I love you
Carey said Hare's done for the year, so Graham's the man from here on out.

Beat Buffalo.
I use to be a firm believer in rankings coming out of hs. After watching NIU players over the years, which were lightly recruiting and not ranked by these services, out perform highly ranked players on a weekly basis, I could not agree more. Your point above, along with my observations, make me believe it's all about getting the right player in the right system. Go huskies! Let's keep proving those services wrong. But hey, that doesn't mean I wouldn't take a five star recruit here or there either :)

Get a room!
I was very down on Ryan Graham after CMU, but he showed me something tonight. He won't be great, but the season is far from over.

Like a boss, son.

I feel good about Graham. He came through big when we needed him to. Much like Hare did in Evanston.

Looks like a Matt Forte speak With a sprain IMO. Hare looks like Achilles. Hope TLL is back. Seems like a big leader for us.
Graham looked like he can handle what's given. If he can be an "Alex smith" type game manager we will be in good shape. Short slants, lots of run plays fr the RB and sometimes the deep by ( like to Kenny) to keep the defense honest. We will be good for the rest of the yeAr because of our defense is good enough.
Ely looked lame throughout the game....he missed WR's several times. What I didn't understand is Turdledo moving away from the run game.....they were grinding us big time in the first half.
Graham stepped up big time with some runs, and some nice completions on crossing routes.

bottom line: I'm still amazed we won without Hare and TLL.....now let's see how this plays out over the next 3 games
I didn't think I'd like a Toledo QB more than Owens, but I was wrong. I love you, Bama!!!!
I don't mean to pee in the cornflakes, but it's one game. Now there will be time to study and counter what Graham does. Not saying don't be excited.....just saying it's going to get harder for him.

I think there is some funny business with those rankings - at the very least some bias to the big schools. Or could simply be incompetence of the people who publish these rankings. If they had any actual talent at evaluating players some school would be paying them big bucks to work for them.

Yes your 100% right but you can't teach hitting guys right in the numbers on the easy ones. He did that everytime tonight.hare has had issues doing that at times.

NIU is almost never going to get the highest rated guys....it's always about system fit. That's what you should be analyzing in recruiting. Not stars. Fit.

I'm licking my lips too. I typed that more for myself, ha.

Good God, Seven, because of one half of football, recruiting rankings mean nothing?

Ely didn't play well, Graham did. It was fantastic, but let's not put Graham into the NFL just yet, okay?

Ranking high school kids is most definitely an inexact science. There is no way to predict how well a kid adapts to college, how he fares against better competition, how he develops physically as he matures, etc.

Nonetheless, a lot of time and effort is spent scouting these kids and these rankings are most definitely not irrelevant. They are not the end all, be all, but they are useful for recruiting purposes.
The Hare injury is somewhat easier to take for me because this season is hanging on a thread anyway, and is one game away from being over. In that sense it doesn't feel like you are losing Hare for a half of a season, it feels smaller. We really did not expect MACC hopes going into this Toledo game, so anything that happens from here on out is gravy. The concerning thing of course is Hare's status for the start of next season.
