It was one of the few intelligent places on the web to get sports and entertainment info.
I understand wanting to cut back after the money they had to spend on the actual sports, but Grantland was easily one of the best things about ESPN. Not only that, but finding out you lost your job by twitter is pretty cutthroat.
Everyone knew it was coming after ESPN split ways with Bill Simmons.

I was surprised they waited this long.
Grantland was Bill Simmon's vanity project. There was a lot of great writing there, but it didn't make ESPN money. Given how their parting shook out, I'm surprised it lasted this long.
