Tusculum 2014-2015 Schedule

Tusculum 2014-2015 Roster
Chase Mounce 6’10” 235 Jr., 31.8 min., 16.5 ppg, 7.9 rpg, 2 blocks
Javon Prince 6’3” 170 Sr., 29.9 min., 15.6 ppg, 2.9 rpg, 1.9 assists, 2. 4 t.o., 1.0 steals
Cory Fagan 6’5” 185 Jr. , 32.0 min., 10.7 ppg, 2.4 rpg, 2.1 assists, 1.8 t.o.
Zach Davis 6’4” 190 Jr., 20.6 min., 10.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 1.4 assists, 3.0 t.o.
Matt Shown 6’7” 220 Sr., 31.4 min., 9.2 ppg, 8.9 rpg

A very experienced team, all Juniors and Seniors with their top 5 scorers back. Have some size and rebound well (+2.1, 38.9 vs 36.8) led by 6’10” Mounce with 7.9 rebounds, and 6’7” 220 Shown with 8.9. Not a slow down team – opponents score 78.9, they score 72.6.

We played these same guys the last couple of years, winning 90-52 halfway through the season last year (post Giplaye), and 108 to 87 in mid-December 2 seasons ago. They were 7-21 last year and preseason rankings have them near the bottom of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) at 10th of 12 teams. http://thesac.com/sports/mbkb/2015-16/re...1027g6980e This one is more about playing our game, playing hard, and seeing how well the Bucs are coming together, than it is about adjusting to anything special that Tusculum is likely to throw at us.
Ahhhh....the first official thread of the season. Makes me happy.

Tusculum won't score 35.
If I remember correctly didn't the Bucs recruit their 6'10'' guy Mounce? Looks like he may have produced in SoCon competition.

Hope you are right. Still can't believe they scored 87 against us last year. We of course are a completely different team, but I am more interested this year on our defense under Forbes. I think we will have no problems scoring. I just hope the days of guys having career scoring nights against us are in the past. Holding them to 35 would be impressive, even if it is against Tusculum.
I passed Glass today on campus. Gave him a high five! Dude is a BEAST.

I think Bucfaithful is getting a little carried away here. In the last 15 years we have not held ANYONE to 35 points. Not D3 Guilford, not Warren Wilson, not UVA Wise. We play one or two SAC teams every year, and in 15 years we have not held a SAC team (Tusculum, Carson-Newman, Wingate or Mars Hill) to less than 52 points: Tusculum just last year, 90-52. Our worst trouncing of a SAC team in that time was probably Mars Hill by 100-57 in 2003.

Our most overwhelming wins in that time have been over smaller schools: Milligan in 2012 by 94-46, UVA Wise in 2006 by 90-43, D3 Guilford in 2002 by 104-37 and Warren Wilson in 2000 by 109-41. Unless I’ve missed something, those are the only teams that we’ve doubled up since 2000, even with Wadood, Fields and Tim Smith on board.

The most overmatched, demoralized team we’ve played recently was UVA Wise in the first half last year. And even they managed 21 points in the half, to fall behind 61-21. That’s more than 35 per game. And that one ended 111-66.

We certainly should beat Tusculum convincingly. But I doubt that we’ll turn them into Guilford or Warren Wilson. Now, Averitt may be a different story, but I haven’t taken a hard look at them yet.
Sure am glad we're not playing them in football, and hope we don't for the next several years.
66, this is the first game of a new exciting era basketball thread.

IMO, your football comments are boring, tiresome and out of place on this thread.
I'm also glad that the football team doesn't have to play Tusculum either. Guess that makes two of us.
I am glad we arent playing Tusculum in football too, they are way better than us.

This isnt football, and basketball is ETSU's flagship sport. We beat Tusculum by 40.

Havent been this excited to see the team since Bartow's first season.

lol geez take it easy, the guys just posting a fact, whether it be basketball or football.

It's only Tusculum, but super pumped to see the guys on the court in some real game action. I'll be paying close attention to Jurkin. Hopefully Mounce challenges him a bit
So excited for basketball season to begin next week and see some actual action on the court!
buc73 is fired up.
Glad we didn't mention the Tennis teams!

Completely unnecessary in a basketball thread. Be excited for basketball.
I really like some of the stuff that Forbes is saying in the article that Bucfaithful links to above. About Peter Jurkin, it sounds just about right:

“He’s had kind of a rough three years,” Forbes said. “He’s a guy that each week he continues to progress. I try to be careful with him for two reasons. No. 1, his injuries. I don’t want to beat him up. And No. 2 is expectations. I think just because you’re big and tall and come from Indiana, people have high expectations. He’s going to be a good player. It’s just going to take some time.”

Patience and steady work and progress are the watch words here. We don't need Peter Jurkin to kick butt against Tusculum and Averett. We need him to gradually improve so that he can be a difference maker come tournament time.

“We’d like to play as many guys as we can and give everybody a look before the season starts,” Forbes said. “I think our guys are excited to play somebody other than themselves. It’ll be an exciting time when the lights come on. Everybody’s on the same team, with the same goal and the same purpose in mind.”

I hope that he does play the whole crew and see what he's got. Nice to hear a coach say that and think that he means it.
Getting this bunch of guys who are so new to each other to play as a team, with the same goal, the same purpose, is the whole trick, isn't it?

Can't wait to see them. Go Bucs!
I'm always excited on the night before the season starts, but this year feels even better. So much potential with these guys. Can't wait to see how it all unfolds over the next 4 months.
File this post in the category of totally overthinking a lopsided match.

I mentioned that Tucsulum had a little size and better than average rebounding for a DII team. They are average from 3, but have at least 2 decent shooters, with Javon Price making 91 on .396 shooting and Cory Fagan making 65 on .387 shooting.

But they also have poor guard play: their t.o. margin is a terrible -5.25; they lose 9 steals while making 4.25. At 15.4 turnovers per game, they were tied for 256th out of 294 DII teams last year. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men...eam/217/p6 And they lost by far their best ballhandling guard in Mason Fox who had a 2.4 assist to t.o. ratio. We scored in bunches off pressure defense last year, and could do even more damage this year.

Overall, however, this game is less about Tusculum and more about how the Bucs are coming together on offense and defense.
