The Bucs should be focusing on 1st things first: Tusculum and Averitt. But it’s hard for us fans not to be taking a peek ahead at the challenge from Wisconsin Green Bay. So, for fans only…

Green Bay returns 3 guys from the 7 man rotation on a team that saw so much success the last 2 years with 1st and 2nd place Horizon League finishes. They are: Guard Carrington Love 6’1” 171 Sr., and Forwards Jordan Fouse, 6’7 225 Sr., 1st team All-Horizon preseason and Kenneth Lowe 6’8” 230 Jr..
However, all the losses (top 2 scorers and 4 of their top 6) cause them to be rated only 6th in the preseason Horizon League rankings.

Carrington Love 6’1”171: 31.2 min., 10 ppg on .302 from 3, 3.2 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 t.o.’s, 1.7 steals
Jordan Fouse 6’7” 225: 32.1 min., 7.5 ppg on .498 from the field and only .233 from 3; with 7.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.6 t.o.’s and 1.9 steals. Like I said, he's preseason All-Horizon League
Kenneth Lowe 6’8” 230: 19.3 min., 3.4 ppg on .522 from the field and no 3’s with 2.6 rebounds

Green Bay is changing over almost as much as ETSU, but are bringing in fewer new guys (3 high quality recruits: freshmen twin guards from Lake Mineola Florida, Florida 6A (out of 8 divisions - biggest is 8A) Player Of the Year Anthony Brown, 6’1” 160 and his All-State twin brother 6’2” 165 Avery; and highly touted JUCO 6’4” 220 Jr. G. Charles Cooper, who finished second in the NJCAA (National Junior College Athletic Association) in points per game [18.8 ppg, but with only 17 made 3’s at .304], steals (58), and offensive rebounds (77) for a 23-9 Kaskaskia team). They are trying to fill more positions from last year’s bench.

As for team strengths and weaknesses: they are not good 3 point shooters, averaging a worst in the Horizon League 4.6 makes per game on .294 shooting. They were also worst in the Horizon in free throw shooting, with returnees averaging less than .600. Last year they defended very well, holding opponents to .405 shooting overall and maintaining a 7.4 point victory margin (68.2 to 60.8). They rebounded well with a +2.5 margin (35.6 to 33.1). They had a solid assist to t.o. ration of 1.2 with a +1.8 turnover margin over opponents and held opponents to the reverse. Although it’s a good bet that they will continue to be poor 3 point shooters, and not good free throw shooters, most of the rest is pretty speculative with so much change over.

Between 6’7” 225 Fouse and 6’8” 230 Lowe and a couple of big bench players, they have some size. Expect to see some action from 6’11” 240 Jr. Henry Uwadiae (Benin City, Nigeria) and 6’9” 245 So. Kerem Kanter (Istanbul, Turkey) who saw action in only half the games last year with little production: Uwadiae averaging 5.2 minutes with 0.9 points and 0.8 rebounds; and Kanter averaging 4.2 minutes with 1.6 points and 0.9 rebounds.

This team is in a similar position to Mercer last year – lots of big losses, but a core of talented players at both guard and forward used to playing and winning within this system. They should be very tough.
Successful teams are often met with low expectations for a season that follows the loss of key players. It has been my observation that those teams frequently exceed those low expectations.

I think it is often the case that the remaining players played a larger role in the previous season than they were credited for or most people realized. Also, they are free to flourish as their responsibilities increase in the absence of departed teammates. With the addition of what sounds like a trio of very talented newcomers, Wisconsin-Green Bay may very well fall into that over-achiever category.

For the same reasons, I remain leery of Wofford as well.

Looks like they still can't shoot 3s or FTs. Points in the paint, 2nd chance points and fast break points suggest it was a lay up line against ridiculously inferior opponent.
Green Bay's opponent, UW-Stout, which they beat 95-41, is a weak DIII team. They went 3-22 last year and a good chunk of this year's schedule is playing other small teams' JV squads. http://athletics.uwstout.edu/schedule.as...ath=mbball Their squad has 1 guy 6'7", 1 guy 6'5", 1 guy 6'4" and 1 guy 6'3". Everybody else is 6'2" or less. They would make UVA Wise look studly. Their coach took the interesting approach of just using the game to give his team some experience, playing seventeen (17) guys between 6 and 13 minutes each, with 20 guys in all seeing action. Imagine the talent level on the floor with such a team fielding its third and fourth stringers. http://athletics.uwstout.edu/roster.aspx?path=mbball

Of course Green Bay was playing without it's top man, All Horizon league forward Jordan Fouse.

So nothing much can be learned here, except that even against air Green Bay has trouble shooting. They doubled up a DIII team that wasn't really fielding their best, without using their own best player.

Most teams struggle with free throws early in the season and in blowout games. I wouldn't read too much into that. Although UWGB wasn't great from the line last year.

A couple of years ago we played Bradley early, and they had been pretty weak from 3 over the first 3 or 4 games. Unfortunately, they turned it around against Richmond and shredded the nets against us.

But that Bradley team had shot really well the previous season, whereas, as Mike says, Green Bay had not.

Early games don't tell the whole tale, even in the best of circumstances.
I am really looking forward to this game even though I have an hour plus drive to get there. Should be fun. Will definitely be different.
I've offered for my kids to go in late to school to come to this game with me. I've got one maybe. The others are whining about it being too early. Maybe a bribe of Starbucks will help? Hmmmm.

Me on the other hand? I'm pumped for a one time experience like this. I arranged my work schedule a few weeks ago so I can go in late for the day.
If they're planning sunrise doughnuts and coffee at the game, probably be a good time to start advertising. If not, please let me bring my thermos in! I don't fancy having popcorn, hot dogs, and coke at 6am.

The flyer I got with my season tickets called it "Bucs' Pajama Party" and said there would be Free Coffee and Donuts (while supplies last) from Roadrunner and Dunkin' Donuts.
