Another reason is coaching continuity. How long this remains is a question marK? Hancock and others could be in much demand by others with higher salaries then what can be offer at UT, including coach campbell. If Campbell leaves, I would hope Hancock would be consider as a replacement.

Toledo's success this year has put them in the spotlight and I am certain that the coaching staff are currently prominent on every university AD's radar screen or for every head coach looking to replace assistants. It is almost a given that some P5 programs will be calling later this season regarding coaches and at least some of the UT coaches will have an opportunity to double or triple their salaries (or maybe even make out better than that) next year and for most people that is an offer that can't be refused. The question is whether the loss will involve a few position coaches or maybe a coordinator or the whole shoot match---Campbell and probably most of his entire staff.

I agree that is Campbell moves on at this point the focus should be on hiring the new head coach from within. When a successful G5 program loses a head coach, the goal should be maintaining continuity which is often helped by an internal hire. When a program in total disarray fires a head coach that is the time to look outside the program.

The assumption is always that a successful coordinator will be also be a good head coach which sometimes is the case and sometimes not because being a head coach is an entirely different job from being a coordinator and it requires a different skill set (for example, see Amstutz).

Of our two current coordinators, Heacock has done an outstanding job with the defense but I think I would probably prefer Candle for the head coaching position, not so much for his success as offensive coordinator but for his reputation as an ace recruiter.

Given the teams success so far this year, it is just a fact of life for G5 programs that coaching changes are inevitable, so we may as well just sit back and enjoy the ride because this team has the potential to be a really special team-----but as always potential has no real value until if and when it is realized and that is always a difficult task, which is what makes it so special when it does occur.
