I'm thinking we will find out tonight. Can't wait

I think the offense is a contender. I don't think the defense and special teams are contenders. Like you say, we will know more after tonight. Not looking like the weather is going to help us.
the definition of the thread title provides the answer....we don't know yet in W/L speak....

tonight is where we find out one of two things....

is Monken ready to fire on all cylinders (and he did for the most part last week) and/or how do the players respond to tonight's challenge....

w/o a doubt, southern miss fans are chompin' for resurgence....and the bulb is being screwed in.....

and backer is right about the O....sooooooooooo many tools Monk has now....

on the flipside, old southern miss fans have a tough time letting go of ol' nasty....those days are gone....especially with an up tempo offense

I don't know if any of you have looked at the TOP relative to our offensive style, but it has been impressive this year....this is one time where the numbers can matter when it comes to conditioning, depth, and strength late in the game....

oh yeah.....our D has bent, but fgs work in that world and we are swarming creating TOs...

tonight we find out what the next chapter yields....I'm optimistic....
If we win tonight there is no reason to think that we can't win out until we play La. Tech. That should be a good ball game too. There is excitement for the first time in several years!

We will have one (possibly two) of our safeties (Foster,Truly) ,LB (Swain) and a couple DL back in the mix. Should help.
Tonight IS our season. If we win, the game in Ruston looms LARGE! I plan on going to Ruston. I would like for that game to be HUGE, so, this is the most important game of the season for us. This lets us know if we are where we need to be or still a year away.

agree....and yeah, we all know have to go to ruston and how difficult that would be....being the last game is the best possible scenario.....it's almost like it was scripted.....

having said that....I don't do the 'cart before' thingy.....I remember '11 all too well...

tonight is my only focus.....and I really want us to beat the shite out of them for the last four years of pain....

this is a revenge game of the biggest kind (for this southern miss fan)
Contender we are. Hopefully we get over the hump tonight.....
I will be sitting in NELA rooting for the Mustard Birds!! That would make the Rivalry in Dixie even better!

that one I'll disagree with....but I get you wanting to hedge your position 03-wink

it would be cool to see a pair of conference undefeated teams duke it out for the west title...

disclaimer: this sentiment is hypothetical rhetoric....

04-cheers to you guys having continued success

edit: reverse the first portion sentiment of the first statement....I easily agree....my dyslexic brain saw rooting for the turd herd.....I'm already starting to get pickled 03-wink
USM is probably a contender, but we'll get to see how far they've come tonight. Marshall doesn't appear to be what they were the last three years, but they do have a good program and they're one of the best three teams in the conference.
USM will still be contender for the West and CCG until USM plays Tech on the last day of the regular season. This game against Marshall won't break USM's season - there is still a lot of football to play. It will definitely make USM season if USM wins. USM has everything to gain and nothing to lose with the game tonight. On the other hand, if Marshall loses the game tonight, they will lose a lot of credibility as one of the top G5 teams. just my 2c/

Like i said, I can live with bend/don't break defense. Hopefully they don't break tonight (and I won't be able to watch the game, because I"ll be at the bowling alley and they'll be addicted to the Cardinals game on every TV).

Losing or winning tonight makes no difference in terms of conference rank...

If you Lose then win out till the Tech game it's still just as important because if Tech also wins out till then that game is for the West title

It makes all of the difference in the world to Southern Miss fans, because it tells us if we are even close to being where we want to be. This is our benchmark game for the season.

We do not want to be merely the "best in the west." We want to be where we were when this conference was founded- the top! Beating conference teams was an afterthought. That conference included Louisville, Cincy, Memphis, etc. It contained NONE of the teams in the conference now. We at least want to beat the first teams "off the bench" that back-filled C-USA. You must understand how hard of a pill our slide has been to swallow. We were the best when C-USA was good... now we are fighting for our lives to be at the top of this edition. This game IS our season. If we win, Tech will become our season. If we lose, well... we can still win our division, but that doesn't help to erase the pain.

To the goals of the post I quoted it mean little...

win the west then the CUSA championship game

in that regard this is not the make or break game of the season. Lose tonight you still hold the goal for the rest of the season in your hand.
Exactly right, this is not a make or break game for us...
