Quote:It's safe to say we've reached out to all the Power 5 schools," said UAB assistant coach Jeff Wulbrun. "They'd be on our schedule if they were willing to play the game."

Quote:The Blazers are already under contract for the NABC Hall of Fame Classic next season in Kansas City, which also includes Kansas, Cal and George Washington.
Potentially getting a crack at both of Haase's alma maters--not bad.

And as for the scheduling, we all know it's not because of trying. When you win 80% of the time (probably 90% in non-Mempiss games), there's no incentive.
Fun times ahead boys.
That'll be four years in a row of playing in a quality early season tournament.

Really enjoyed the article. This shows the coaches have tried everything they could to line up quality opponents, but it takes two to tango.
The Ray Watts effect:

"The trip to Destin is a centerpiece of a schedule which wasn't easy to put together, especially with the unprecedented circumstances that came with the initial decision to disband the university's football program. Scheduling efforts were suspended not long after the December announcement because of the uncertainty.

"We didn't know what conference we would be in if they didn't reinstate football," Wulbrun said. "We didn't know how many conference opponents we might be playing, when the conference season might be starting."

It put the scheduling efforts, which weren't picked up again until soon before the announcement to work toward reinstating football in June, way behind.

"If it's done in February, your chances of scheduling opponents would have been done two to three months before we made our run in the NCAA Tournament," Wulbrun said. "We might have had a better chance of scheduling a high major opponent."
Not defending Watts, but how does not knowing what conference you will be in keep you from scheduling big games or games period.

1) We knew we wouldn'tend up in ACC, SEC, BIG 10, BIG 12, etc.
2) Not knowing how many to schedule... Regardless of your conference you should know the minimum number of OOC games you'll need, and maybe fill in a couple more when the dust settles.

My opinion is that MVC was a serious possibility initially and the type of schedule we might need was the biggest question, not how many or when.

Let's win every game and it won't matter who we schedule.

Watts should be fired...point blank. Look at all the fall-out. Who makes decisions without having contingencies in place. No need to say it.....Watts does!05-mafia

i see your point, but I will say that it is possible a team might be willing to play UAB as a member of cusa, but perhaps not a member of the asun. I know there is a lot more to it then picking up the phone and saying lets play a game, but I can see how this year would have been particularly tough with the circumstances surrounding UAB.

Bingo. Pearl even alluded to this during the UAB-Auburn talks. That's something that some do not understand. If you think UAB has problems getting people to play them now as a member of CUSA, its nothing compared to being a member of the ASun. It would be extremely difficult to get even mid-major CBB teams to visit an ASun team. Forget about ANY P5 school. Also, conferences don't all play the same number of conference games, start their seasons at the same time, play on the same days, etc...
I hope this puts an end to the complaint (and I know it won't) "Why don't they pick up the phone and schedule so and so." "It's ridiculous that we have such a weak home schedule. They should schedule bigger names"

You can't schedule them if they won't play you.
The complainers will say Watts is responsible for bad scheduling.

They'll complain about that and not having an OCS....07-coffee3

he is responsible. his actions caused us to cancel all our games.
The problems with getting quality basketball teams to play us home and home predates Watts. That is just a new excuse, not a reason.

That's fine. Haase needs to stop making one of his talking points playing a tough schedule then.

Win the C-USA Tourney or bust.

What basketball games did we cancel?

That wasn't Haase who said it. It was Wilbrun. In the video in the other thread, Haase's explanation is more realistic. He said that because we finished strong and have so many returning players, no one wants to come here. He said it is a testament to the program they are building that people wanted to play them when he first got here and now it is harder to schedule.

This isn't just a Haase problem. It was a Davis problem, it was a Anderson problem, it was a Murry problem and even a Gene problem.

It's also a problem with schools like Gonzaga, Wichita State etc.
The coach said the situation around our athletic program caused extra difficulties in scheduling. I think he should know.
I understand Haase didn't say that in this presser....but he has said it many times in the past.

I understand the situation we are in and that's just the way it is with mid-majors.

Hopefully it stays like this for a little while.
