Rhetorical questions. With 110 players on the ETSU roster, can there not be found eleven among this crowd that can play better defense, especially pass defense? Or, can there not be eleven picked and taught how to play defense?

It seems to me now that we are having pretty much the expected season we could ever have with the scheduling and the decision to recruit and go with freshmen only. We are competitive with Division 3 teams. We have played two pretty good Division 3 teams and barely lost. So we know where we are and it is our goal now to get better by the end of the season to where we can beat some good Division 3 teams. Next year I expect some huge improvements since the coaches now know fully what they must recruit. As far as player development we are sort of like a junior college right now with no juniors and no seniors. I just hope we get better as the season progresses.
The defense would be better if the offence could play more than two quarters a game. You cannot go three and out over and over and expect the defense to bail you out every time. The offense has turned the ball over inside our 30 yd line every game, twice in two games, cannot get a yard or less for a first down on at least five series. The offensive woes and special team mistakes have caused the defense to play way to many downs and the end result is a tired defense will eventually give up big plays and points.

As for the 110 man roster, that number includes players that are walk-ons that may never play in a game ( sometimes you find a nugget ) but are needed for practice and scout teams. They have approx twenty redshirts. They have three injured players that were on the two deep roster. The game roster is approx. fifty-five players.

The 110 man roster does not mean the Bus have 110 players that will play game minutes.
The guy who beat us. If App State signed him, then they saw him as a potential FBS quarterback. Why didn't we go after him if he was leaving App State?

He transferred to a school that he would start playing immediately. ETSU did't have a team playing last year.

I didn't think he was any more talented than Herink.
Glad he's doing well, but as a red-shirt freshman, how is Wiegel playing?

From the below article, name the NFL veteran who said, "defensively, they're very sound" about the ETSU football team?

Wow,, he is a Master of blowing smoke are he was watching the Charleston Southern tape and got the teams confused.
Hello again my fellow SoCon fans. I’ve been traveling over the last couple weeks and was lucky enough to take in the Pitt vs. Virginia Tech game this past week. The week before that I got to see a pretty interesting game between Towson and Elon (whether included).

While down in North Carolina, talking with a few friends of mine, the ETSU Buccaneers became a talking point. And before everybody starts chiming in, I’ll let you know now that it was a 70/30 split, good versus not so good. The 30% came via a Elon recruiter. Seems ETSU stole one of the Elon prospects and Towson lost one of their prospects to ETSS you as well. And again, before everybody starts saying, oh, it’s only Elon and Towson, it should be noted that both of these players had multiple offers to bigger schools. That prompted me to look into some of the other 2015 recruiting class. I was pleasantly surprised to see that most of the players who received football scholarships are being redshirted. I believe there is only one or two players who received a scholarship, playing as a true freshman.

This is why I would like to address something. Full disclosure, I have no affiliation with the ETSU program, their coaching staff, boosters or alumni. I am a former player and a former recruiter and evaluator. Therefore, two things jump right out at me. One, a statement saying somebody like Coach T doesn’t know what kind of talent. It takes to play in the FCS, and two, blanket statements regarding the scheduling process.

I’m going to try to keep this post short (as I never do, but I will try…) Let me start by saying I understand that it probably stings a bit being beat by Division III teams. 1) The fact is you’re playing 18-year-old players against teams with four and five year college players. What you have to do is evaluate your freshman against an FBS freshman squad. Do not evaluate 18-year-old “kids”, against 22 and 23-year-old players (especially along the offense and defense line). It doesn’t matter what division the line is in, freshman players head-to-head against seniors (DI, II or III) has to be evaluated differently. Making statements such as a particular coach doesn’t understand the level of talent. It takes is completely absurd, the same coach you speak of is placed numerous players in the NFL. That is a fact; it is not speculation. Do your homework. In fact, he just had an article written on your offense coordinator who is directly responsible for placing three quarterbacks in the NFL. The NFL people - quarterbacks - it doesn’t get much more difficult than that.
Yes, I’ve noticed a lot of poor play by the Bucs quarterbacks. Again, your quarterbacks were playing high school football five games ago. You have a quarterbacks coach who NFL quarterbacks speaks highly of. So I think the staff has a little idea of what it takes to play at the I-AA level.

2) Scheduling: I don’t know why anyone in the world would’ve thought a team of freshman would play a schedule ¾ filled by true FCS teams and thought they would come up with a .500 record. That’s absurd. Yes, it might’ve been possibly thought of with five or six DI transfers and five or six JUCO transfers. But that’s not the case. The coaching staff was more than clear as to how they wanted to build their team. Yes, you can quote ODU all you want, but the fact is, as soon as that first class graduated, so did their winning record, and so did their fan base. Take a look at Georgia State (BCS). They took on a 2 win Liberty University (FBS) and got beat at home. Little-known fact, Georgia State has five transfers from the folded UAB team. They are now 2-25 or 2-26. That’s right, they started off with a good squad, with a mix of transfers, and a need to win right away. Which they did that first year. I believe they won 6 games that fist year. They won 3 game their second year and a total of 3 games in the last 4 years! BTW – its not a stadium issue either – they play in a place called the Georgia dome…. Fact is both ODU and GSU built their teams to start quick, but when the transfers went away, so did the talent because their was no room to grow. So, scheduling a couple of cream puffs is good for a mindset, but you need play against talent. The fact is, these kids are going to be playing against SoCon teams next year. You cannot throw them in against that level of talent without baptizing them in fire right now.

Do not dismiss St. Francis. That team has 40 scholarship athletes on the roster and they played their starters to the end of the game, they did not let up, nor should they. But the fact is, 40 scholarship athletes filled with juniors and seniors, took on a team fielded by less than 20 scholarships (and most of them were partial scholarships and walk ons). Yes, they took their lumps, but will be better suited Year for it. Over the next two years, you will see a drastic change in the roster. If my numbers are correct, you will have approximately 12 to 15 full scholarships (2015) and 4-8 full scholarships (2014) with a current 15 partial scholarships. In a sense, your next year’s squad will field twice as many scholarship athletes than this year. But, they will be going up against .25% stronger schedule. They will be playing in the SoCon, and as long as you have a construction site instead of a parking lot, you can entice athletes to your University. I’m going to write one more piece in the next section that should interest a few of the ETSU diehards. Again, I hope to make it back to see you all at one of this years games. (I’m going to try to make it to the Gardner Webb game).
Guys/Gals like I said, all is not lost. As I alluded to in my previous post, you have some good talent (2015 recruiting class) showing up on the field next year. Likewise, I’m sure you will get some solid recruits in the 2016 signing class. I wanted to bring it to your attention that if you go online and you look at the players who were signed (not from the Tennessee area) you will see that those kids players were ranked as star athletes in various scouting magazines and websites. Seven players had multiple offers for football and four more had multiple DI offers for multiple sports. This translates to terrific skill/speed position athletes. Yes there are a lot of recruits from the TN area as well. I’m only shedding light on the out-of-state athletes because people are suggesting that the recruiting is limited to the Tennessee region. (It is my belief, I never call out the player by name due to respect for all players). However, you have to remember that not all recruits received scholarships. This is a key to remember. You may have a bunch of players on the roster from Tennessee, but that does not mean they are all scholarship athletes. More than likely, they are terrific athletes that the staff believes could possibly turn into partial scholarships or full scholarships down the road. This is a tool many FCS teams use to round out their scholarship numbers and generate interest (money) throughout the immediate area.
This blog only speaks to the scholarship (partial or full) athletes. The 2015 full ride recruiting class encompasses players from Ohio, Virginia, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, and I believe South Carolina if memory serves me correctly. As the high school football season comes to a head next month I will be looking at players for my old alma mater and I will no doubt come across a few names the box are trying to target. As it sits now, the coaches did a pretty good job in 2015 by signing players who had offers from MTSU, UTC, Mercer, Montana, SCSU, CCU, ISU and Samford, just to name a few. (By the way, these players were all redshirted) that you put a smile on your face Bucs fans. I cannot speak of the players signed in the 2014 signing class because there were so many, I simply just don’t have the time to go back that far. But I can tell you that from what I’ve seen (watching the games online) there are a couple that had and a lot of interest from other schools. They chose to play for a team that had not yet started. Seems to say a lot about character. They also chose to play for coaches they really didn’t know. It seems to say quite a bit about the respect they have for the staff. Doing the math - it won’t come quick, but it will come. You just have to study the course and believe in your program.

Now, enough about recruits and schedules. Someone get a blog started on that football stadium and put some pressure on the folks to build it. Take care, see you in a week or two!

If we get through October without breaking ground or a date announcement on that, I might worry, but from all I've heard, construction will be starting fairly soon.

That area may just seem like a regular old parking lot at first glance, but I think there's a lot of shuffling that's having to occur on the few things that are right there nearby. Plus, maybe the city is dragging their feet on permit approval or something minor like that.
Here we go again. JC is not holding up the construction of the stadium.
Coach Torbush has not said anything about injuries but just for the record , the Bucs have lost four of their first six defensive lineman. All of the starters are injured. It looks as if all of them may take a medical redshirt.
Then he needs to mention that. I understand not wanting to make excuses. However, the casual fans need to know these things.

Fans needed to know going into the first game that KSU was probably going to win instead of saying "it will be a good matchup, if either team wins by a lot the other team will have to re-evaluate how they are doing things".

Fans needed to know that most of the scholarship players on defense are being redshirted this year. They didn't.

And if every one of the defensive linemen are injured and are likely to take a medical redshirt, fans need to be told that and reminded on a regular basis.

I totally agree with this. Torbush needs to EXPLAIN these things, especially at this 0-5 point of the season. Don't run off fans due to a breakdown in communication. Not being forthcoming creates suspicions.
