I'm thinking about a couple of nights on a Christmas travelling trip. There are myriad possibilities, but I just looked at KY, and these two are obvious for my travel plans.
Is there an advantage for one over the other? Full disclosure, I know nothing about either outside of sports.

Gee compairing lexington to louisville. I don't really know where to start! If you plan on spending most of your time in the city Louisville has a ton more to see and do! If you plan on looking at historic sites like civil war sites then Ft Duffield is about 15 miles from louisville. Perryville is about the same distance from both.
What kind of activities are you looking for?

I should have offered more information. I'm travelling from Richmond to Memphis.
I will have my wife, and a 7 year old. The main activity will be time with each other, for meals, activities, ect. We stopped in Gatlinburg a couple of years ago, and could do that again, but that place is cheesy. Our 5 year old (at the time) loved it, but well, the place sucks. Our hotel was nice, and up on top of a mountain, but everything else was, well, you know.
So, I'm looking at options for two nights, and then continuing to push forward on the 23rd. FWIW, I'm not afraid of prices. I probably dropped a grand for two nights in Gatlinburg if you count everything. I'm just exploring options.
I'm also looking at Asheville, and Knoxville.

Louisville. And it's a no brainer.

Falls of the Ohio State Park (Indiana side)
Belle of Louisville
A Christmas Carol at Actors Theatre
Big Four Bridge -- walk to Indiana weather might be iffy
Kentucky Dinner Train - Bardstown run
Kentucky Railway Museum -- New Haven
Lexington is a nice little college town. Probably not unlike many college towns throughout the country. I believe there is only one building over 4 stories in the entire city. Nothing wrong with Lexington if you are looking for quaint. Keep in mind when Lexingtonians want to party they come to Louisville.
Louisville is the Nation's 16th largest city. Everything you can find in most large cities you can find there. Usually on a smaller scale but not always. Restaurants, arts, cinema, museums, history
It all boils down to what you want to do. If you are looking for a relaxing two days I would book a room in one of the B&B's along Paris Pike just north of Lexington. If you want to nightlife, good restaurants and adult entertainment, you book a room in Downtown Louisville.
Whichever you choose I am sure you will enjoy yourself.

I doubt one will be undoubtedly be better than the other. Why not take a few days each to see both?
I have lived in both cities and actually liked living in Lexington better, but the honest truth is that without question, Louisville has more high-quality options of things to do (especially in that season).

Lot to do in both. Both cities and areas very exciting around Christmas.
A Holiday based on Louisville/Lexington/Bardstown/A Bourbon stop or two/and a visit to the beautiful rolling horse country as well as the Churchill Downs Museum. Also a stop at Bowling Green at the Corvette Museum could be cool.
Lexington has plenty of tall buildings, Louisville has even more.
Louisville Metro Pop is about 1.2m. Lexington Metro pop is about 0.4m
Louisville is bigger and more diverse in all respects. But size isn't all that matters.

Take your wife and 7 year old to Asheville, and if neither has been to Biltmore for Christmas, I highly recommend it if only for the Christmas light display. If you choose this option, purchase your tickets early.
If your wife loves shopping, I would also recommend staying close to downtown Asheville // we always stay in the Renaissance Hotel when we visit Asheville -- there are plenty of shops and eats in Downtown. If your wife loves shoes, drop her off at TOPS, then take your son through a downtown stroll.
Would also recommend a trip to the Corner Kitchen restaurant for your 'eats' option (located in Biltmore Village)
