I thought it was a great concept, but does anyone have any details regarding what exactly has been proposed? Who on the medical side would be leading the research effort? I understand it all may be in the conceptual stage, but I'm sure someone here has heard more details as to how this would work and be incorporated into the athletics foundation fund raising.
It has something to do with building a better football helmet, one that will better protect players' heads!
For UAB Football to be tied to such a project is indeed in the cutting-edge medicine spirit of UAB!
Wasn't Virginia Tech once working on something similar to this? I definitely think tying research into athletics is a great idea. Just wondering the logistics of how they intend to do this.

This can be so much more than CTE research. Screening for congenital cardiac problems that cause sudden death in athletes is the first thing that comes to mind. Early detection of injury, physiologic changes of athletes, optimizing treatment protocols are others. There's simply no limit to what you could study. Additionally this could be a service offered to other HS athletes and there would be generation of other ancillary studies (which produce revenue) from lab and radiology. It's a gold mine of information and good will
We have the technology right now to build helmets that
1- have an integrated POV camera (like a gopro) that the NFL would love.
2- have integrated accelerometers to help measure for concussions (that the NFL, college, and high school would love).
Imagine if the first helmets to debut with this technology didn't have the patriots logo on it, but had UAB on the side?

Or better yet, indoor testing facility and research support facility.
I'm too lazy to dig it out, but there is already a UAB researcher working on football related head trauma and concussions. There is also a guy in School of Engineering who is working on improved football helmets. Pull them in, give them space in the football complex. Add in sports nutritionists, PT and exercise specialists. Try to give the med/research side a stake in the program, as well as letting the football program take advantage of cutting edge science. Very smart.

FYI - last year the NFL gave the NIH $30M to study brain injury. There is an ever-growing industry for related research. This is a multi-billion dollar industry that cannot save itself by simply changing the rules. This, if done right, could elevate UAB into the stratosphere of athletic research...
UAB athletics has done medical research before. Mike Davis did extensive research on narcolepsy when he was trying to keep Walter Sharpe eligible.

What is the funding level for the research? I bet if the researchers keep bringing in the money then it would help convince Ingram. Besides, that facility could be used for all of athletics. As a scientist biomedical engineer, I would love to work for such a program.
