“I thought the defense played great all day." - NIU Head Coach Rod Carey

Going to have to disagree with you there. 1st half defense was brutal, giving up multiple big passing plays.
I was thinking the same thing when he said that. I have been disappointed with our secondary which I had high expectations for. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems like teams are passing at will against us. UNLV gave us several gifts with dropped passes and Murray State should have been like my nephew playing Madden by throwing bombs every play. Sadly to I feel Logan is getting beat and guys like Lurry are holding their own...then again I am sure we are putting Logan up against their #1 receivers.

Also, I can't remember a two game period with so many pass interference penalties. Some were BS though, but still.

Positive is I feel our d line is doing a decent job of plugging the gaps against the run, though some of that is at the expense of not getting to the QB quick enough.
It's a little concerning to me that he would say that. They still threw for almost 300 yards, and if they had kept going deep I think they would have been well over 300 yards. And we should have been able to run right through them, all game.
It really makes me concerned for next week
Are we just playing vanilla defense? We've had NO pressure on the QB in the first half. If we do that against MAC West teams (or BG) we'll be down by 30 points by halftime.
Logan has been burned a lot in two games and also has had a few penalties.
Nobody ever looks for the ball.
I wouldn't say the D played great, but I think people underestimated Murray State. They have a lot of transfer players from bigger programs and did an excellent job using the sideline and making very athletic plays early in the game. Their QB was poised too. I knew there was no way they were going to make crazy, one toe in catches on the sideline all day. There were two floaters the Huskie DB's mistimed their jumps on (seems unlikely that will happen constantly).

It wasn't great, but I didn't think it was nearly as bad as others seem to.

Which sets up the defender to be called for P I.
It's 3 games in a row including Marshall that the dbs have not played well in coverage. Trend?

3 games in a row where we've had NO pressure on the QB for most of the game. Makes it very difficult for the DBs.

Absolutely no doubt about it, you are correct. Murray State is not a pushover, especially with their offense, they have not only FBS type speed in some skill positions, but pro-speed. Now their defense, another story.

It was funny to me, they looked like Kent State (their jerseys) and I thought they compared to a MAC East opponent, talent wise.
I thought they looked like Toledo.
Guys, NIU played like horse **** for half the game and still won by 30.

Murray State is a pushover.

As a whole yep, its just they have some skill and speed on offense, that was obvious. They have a few players who run a 4.3 and 4.4 40.

Murray State is a pushover.

That's great but it will not help us against better teams. Certainly nothing wrong with the offense, but the defense is terrible. Our offense will need to fire on all cylinders all the time for us to win games. Unless a miracle happens and we learn how to play defense, the defense will be of little help. I really thought we'd improve this year, but so far that doesn't look to be the case.
This coming out and playing like turtles in quicksand the first half seems almost like a game plan. We basically play one half of decent football game after game. We keep on winning, but this will catch up to us unless we can become a first half team too.
The D line concerns me a bit. Our tackles need to be stouter in there.

On the glass half-full side, our team is 2-0 and they've played well short of their capabilities to this point. There's a lot of upside with this team.

Re: Paris Logan, the interference call against him was a joke. Watch the replay, it's at about the 6:25 mark of the first quarter. He either barely touches the guy or doesn't touch him at all.

Smalls had to just put his hands up on two plays and the pass would have gotten broken up. Instead they have two deep completions. Not looking for the ball was really bugging me yesterday.
But when do you look for the ball when running downfield? You don't know when the QB is going to throw it.
