Not new news but the amount of the deal surprised me.

hat does it mean for Chicago now that Dutch-based Heineken has purchased a 50 percent-stake in Lagunitas Brewing? Not much, according to Lagunitas, which runs a Douglas Park brewery known for its flagship IPA.

The news surprised some, as Lagunitas' founder Tony Magee's been an outspoken critic of other brewery transactions, including Anheuser-Busch InBev's purchase of local craft beer heroes Goose Island. But Tuesday's deal isn't a takeover, Lagunitas brass stressed. It's a partnership that will allow greater beer global beer distribution for Lagunitas, with Magee seeing Mexico as a new frontier. They didn't disclose financials, but the deal's reportedly worth $1 billion.

that comes from distribution. its going to be interesting to see what happens now since Lagunitas has marketed itself as a microbrewery thru and thru. To me their beer isn't anything to crow about. its good, but its no different than the Sam Adams, Sweet Waters, Leinie (excluding the barrage of Shandys). Everyone has an "IPA," an imperial stout and a barrel aged beer of some sort.

So now that they are considered one of the big boys, what are they going to do to maintain their identity.
Too bad the NCAA would have a bit of a fit over a "Lagunitas Stadium"

Screw the NCAA! If Lagunitas wants to donate several million to get their name on the stadium, take the money, say thanks, and put their name on the stadium. Heck, is Massengill donates millions and wants to name the stadium the "Massengill Douche Bags Stadium", I'm all for it!

I think the beer is pretty distinctive. Been to the tasting room and had the beer flight and all were pretty different

Try their beer a lil sumpin sumpin, good stuff. Also, maybe now there will be some good cash coming NIU's way from this.
Sucks is one of their better ones, too... started as a substitute to their seasonal "Brown Shugga Ale" due to a brewing screw-up, but made its way into the lineup because of how popular it was.

In true form, Magee also said that he reached out to Heineken, not the other way around, and that any similar partnership with Anheuser-Bush InBev or Miller Coors would have been “dead on arrival anyway because they don’t get it.” Heineken, apparently, is different.
He could be our big time sugar daddy some day.

McGee is an interesting fellow, free spirit and I hope we can link him to the school like Barsema and the others. We really need big guns. And there's Mike McGrath of mcGrath Lexus who I did not know was an alum until the orange bowl. Suceess in footbal have got alums out of the shadow. Paul Kahn the great Chef owner of Blacbird and Publican and more is an Grad.

He wasn't a business alum and didn't graduate, he was in the School of Music.

I know, he is big into music. Maybe we should give him an honarary degree although he obviously does not need one. The big movir producer Zemeckis went to NIU but did not graduate
I believe Dan Castellaneta (voice of Homer Simpson) is also an NIU grad and google says he has a net worth > $60M. Would be great if we could get some of these alum to help the program & university. So many needs at NIU.
I keep hoping that Cindy Crawford will donate a few million and that we would erect her bust in the plaza outside the west side of Huskie Stadium. I would absolutely love to rub her bust for good luck every time I enter the stadium.

The students blew an opportunity to warm up to him back in the early 2000's when there was a campus wide vote to name the fallen gargoyle. Homer J Goyle only had the 2nd most votes to whatever it ended up being.

Actually Zemeckis was also the Director of Back to the Future, Forrest Gump, Castaway among others.

I had a friend who took a filmmaking class at NIU and Zemeckis came into to talk to his class so there is(or was) at least some involvement.

That's pretty damn cool.
Joan Allen (from the Bourne movies) is an NIU grad.
