roll tide
You can bet the majority of that stuff was sold in the State of Alabama. I have no problem with decent Alabama fans wearing their colors such as the folks who actually graduated from the school and those who regularly attend games.

However, it seems that the majority of those who wear Alabama tee shirt and sweatshirts year around are rednecks who have maybe attended a grand total of one game in their entire lives and who have little brag about in life except their adopted team. They can't even be classified as "sidewalk alumni", at best they are "TV alumni". They may not be able to afford the price of a game ticket, but they can afford to buy Alabama gear at Walmart.

roll tide

sitting in a sports bar in the middle of Iowa last weekend, the most obnoxious person there was the one Alabama fan yelling "Roll Tide."
I eventually went over and asked him how he became to be an Alabama fan (with Crimson Tide visor and all). He explained that he was from Birmingham and an Alabama graduate. We talked a while, and he was actually a very nice guy. But after talking a while, I realized that somehow he considered him an "Alabama grad" after attending UNA and graduating from UAH.
I didn't ask directly, but as far as I could tell, he'd never been to Tuscaloosa (certainly not as a student).

It seems to me that the "TV alumni" (a term I've never heard, but very much enjoy) are far more likely to be the obnoxious guy in a bar

You a good one. I'd have checked him.
"So, you never physically attended a class at UAB? You must have an online degree? No. Well Rawhl Tawd then."
I see Alabama stuff all the time in Memphis. It isn't just sold in Alabama. Even saw quite a bit of Auburn stuff after they won the NC. People are bandwagon jumpers.
