Still keeping an eye on this pre-season bball poll. So far CUSA has UTEP at #104, Middle TN. at #100, and La. Tech at #81. UAB and our Monarchs are the only remaining CUSA teams likely to be listed. So far, of ODU's OOC opponents the ranked teams are NSU at #139, Buffalo at #84, VCU at #69, and GA. St. at #68.

It's just a poll, but it's interesting to see what some of the perceptions are. Here's the link...

It's UF, not Florida State, in the HOF tourney with us.

Thank you. I have corrected the op. I was looking at the schedule an my eyes grabbed onto the "St." from St. Joseph's.
UAB in at #62. ODU is the final CUSA team which will be ranked in this poll.
ODU ranked at #51. Probable NCAA team.

This is really not any surprise but some nice press for Trey and ODU
Let's see how we play now as the HUNTED ! That will be the key. You get everyone's best shot when you are the big dog !! Trey Freeman is not going to surprise anyone this year. You can bet they are going to force us to score in the front court. That might be a challenge for us.

You can't guard the Stop & Pop!

Sounds like a Drive By.
Stop and pop is great, but the lowest percentage play in college basketball.

Some coaches outlaw shots from that distance. Percentages are not in your favor.

Thankfully there is a LOT more to Freeman's game than a stop-and -pop shot. I know that's not what you were suggesting R8R, but we all saw last season what a multi-faceted player TF is. The rest of the conference saw it too, early, and they tried to stop him and failed. Trey will continue to get his and to make those around him better. That is the mark of a winner, which is exactly what he is. ODU's backcourt is going to be solid again, and I am of the opinion that Stith will be a big factor down low and that PP will surprise many.
He's great at it but it's a horrible shot to take nowadays. At best if someone hits 45 percent, and nobody does, you earn .9 points per weighted shot.

If you hit 37 percent of your threes, you are up above 1.

Nobody fouls a midrange jumper and it does very little to break down a defense for an assist or offensive rebound.

It's a great weapon late in the clock but there is a reason nobody shoots them anymore.
R8R is probably right. I see it as an unintended consequence of the 3 point shot. Strategy has changed, unfortunately to the detriment of the game.IMHO
R8R's argument makes sense on paper, but when I look at it in practice, I am not sure I agree. Trey is incredibly efficient, and you couldn't ask for a more productive offensive player, and a huge portion of his shots are mid range. So the question is, if people practiced it more, and were really good at it as a result, would it be less productive than shooting nothing but threes and layups? I think that simplifies things a lot, and you better have better players than your opponent if that is all your offense is a la Duke or Kentucky.
The stop and pop isn't meant to be the meat of your team's shots, if it is you're in trouble. The point of it nowadays is to require the opposing defense to try to plan around it, especially if the player is a versatile as Trey. It doesn't spread the floor as much as the 3, but it can create some space if a threat, and means defenses have to be more vigilant in the mid-range. As a part of a system where you have effective threats in the post, mid, and long ranges it means the opposing defense has to be a lot more honest in guarding you.

My 2 cents.
Trey Freeman went to the foul line 140 times last year. He didn't get there shooting threes. Wish more people had the mid range game like him. If you have a fast first step, like he does, you almost have to foul to stop it.
Trey Freeman attempted 132 three pointers last year out of 502 shots (approx 26%.) I don't know what percentage of his shots were stop-and-pops, or how many were close range as the result of drives. The thing about Trey is he will take what the defense gives him, if they aren't conceding much he will create space for his shot; it's not as though he is offensively one dimensional.
