As long as Tarpey can continue to clean the boards the way he has at the 4 spot we won't go with 2 bigs.

I think we are much more likely to see Rowley at 4 and Tarpey at 3 if we are looking for rebounding rather than having Sheldon and Whitman/Seacat on floor at same time.
I would argue that we have never run a "three guard" motion, much less a "four guard" one.

I don't think that at any point last year did we slide Dixon or Tot into that third guard position. The rotation seemed to consistently have Malinowski backing up Prewitt and Tarpey.

Looks to me like the forward rotation is among Tarpey (really our power forward as others have pointed out), Prewitt, Malinowski and Rowley. I don't know what to expect from Rowley but I am hard pressed to see the point of reducing the minutes allocated to Tarpey/Prewitt/Malinowski to get more playing time for the either Sheldon, Whitman or Seacat.
I think it boils down to wanting your best players on the floor. Which, coincidentally or by design, has been with the guards. If any of our bigs emerge as a mismatch, lineups will change to reflect it.

You've made my point more eloquently than I could. While Tarpey/Prewitt/Mal/Rowley may not be "guards", we're always running 1 in, 4 out sets. And Sheldon/Whitman/Seacat would never play on the perimeter.

I would add that Sheldon, Whitman, & Seacat (I assume) are all good passers and comfortable at the high post. So, though not truly perimeter, they all can aid in ball movement.

You're absolutely right. I don't have any numbers to support this but it always seems like the "4-1 high" is our most effective (and most run) set.
I am confused. Is everyone else including Tarpey/Prewitt/Malinowski as guards?

If you look at minutes played last year, the only guards who played a lot were Thornton and Dixon. Neither Tot nor Burchfield played a lot compared to the forwards I mentioned above and I think their minutes came at the one or two slots, not the three or four.

They are referring to the four players who play on the perimeter on offense as guards. The perimeter positions are basically interchangeable on offense. Out offensive sets usually only have one true post player, and he spends a lot of time at the high post or the top of the key.

If our bigs show they can protect the rim and shot block, I think it can be effective. It allows the long guards to gamble more and shoot the lanes. Sight unseen, Seacat fits the long athletic role. Whitman has the tools. I think Sheldon is better suited for man to man where he can use his physicality to defend.

The fact that we don't have shot blockers is one reason we don't play much man. You don't have to worry about dribble penetration as much if you have a shot blocker behind you. We play zone to try and cut down on the dribble penetration. I would argue Whitman would be better for man that zone because he has the potential to block more shots. Sheldon is better suited for a zone.

If I had to classify them, I'd probably call them "wings". But as Old Tribe pointed out, the real point is that they play outside the perimeter instead of being back to the basket big men.
I know it's high school but seacat avg 3 blocks a game in high school and his AAU coach described him as a natural shot blocker. Let's hope it carries over.
Old Tribe nailed it. Our offensive system against a man defense features 4 on the perimeter that are interchangeable. The 3 and 4 typically start in the corners as the 1 and 2 bring it up, but any of those 4 can be in any of the 4 perimeter spots.

If a team zones us then it is possible that we could use 2 centers, but I can't recall us ever having done that.
Loving the strategy session. I'm going to interrupt it for just a second, because we are less than a month away from tipoff and I think it's time for everyone to get good and fired up.

Maybe shot blocking centers, but Tarpey, Prewitt, and Dixon are all great shot blockers. Ask Eatherton about Dixon.

Most of the video is from last season, but the locker room clip has a few members from the Class of 2014.
Ask Bryant about Tarpey

Never tire watching Tot hustling back on defense and his non-chalance after his monster throwdown at the 2 min mark, until Tarpey nails him in the chest at half court....great stuff!
I know it would be weird right now, but it would be great class-wise to redshirt Tot. Cohn and Schlotman don't have that option, and it would break up the three-PG class we have right now. Of course, I'd rather see Tot get 20 minutes, because I think he's the second coming of Laimis, just as a PG. If anyone wants to see a 3-2/1-2-2 matchup like we used to play with Sumner at the top, we have 4 guys who have the length and ball-hawking skills to play up top in Tarpey, Dixon, Tot, and Omar. Omar's not as quick as the other 3, but he could play there in a pinch, I bet. I'm excited to see those 4 and Sheldon on the floor at the same time, even though it won't happen often. I think it causes all kinds of matchup problems for the other team and lets us dictate action at both ends.

To redshirt Tot [if he is willing, and it can be done]is not a bad idea; especially if Cohn is as good as we all think, and Schlotman is back up to his "old" form as Coach Shaver seems to believe.
