As far as big wins, they did play for a National Championship against FSU in the Sugar Bowl a few years back, when they had Vick. Not a win though. I remember they beat Nebraska a few years ago in Blacksburg. Other than that, I mostly remember them pounding Virginia - over- and over - and over - I think it is up to 15 straight games now.

VA Tech had a really big game against JMU a few years ago....., never mind.
The pinnacle for VT was the 2000 National Championship loss to Florida State. They have been riding the Vick wave down ever since. They usually have 2-3 wins over ranked teams throughout the season and have won the ACC 4 times in 11 years in that league. Their seasons break down like so:

I especially hate VT, so researching and typing this all out was very therapeutic for me. Although, I have to admit, Ten 10+ win seasons over a 16 year period is pretty impressive, but they have really fallen off the past 3 years.
The issue I have with Tech is their fan base. Much the same as I had with UNC when I sojourned in NC and UGA when I was in GA. There are fans of certain schools who feel entitled to winning and are obnoxious about it, even though most have never set foot on campus.
I also root for Tech on the national stage, but if they play anyone I remotely care for, not so much.
I believe that Beemer runs a good program and does things right. He has had a good deal of success, but not nearly as much as his delusional fan base wants. My problem with Tech are the fans.
This reminds me of the story that is told about the meeting of the Va. Tech Board of Visitors some years ago where the Board was trying to figure how to raise Va. Tech's academic stature. After some hours of discussion about academics, a member from the Richmond area is purported to get fed up and blurt out "What Tech really needs is a Middle Linebacker and a Tight End". I'm not sure if it's true, but it sums up how their fans come off.

Pounding Virginia in football is akin to clubbing baby Seals.
Tech's big problem is the inability to keep top talent in state. There's no question they get the best talent that stays in state, but so many schools from other conferences (Big 10 and SEC) come in and swipe some of the 5 star recruits. Virginia has some great football talent, and if more of them went to Blacksburg I think VT would be much stronger.
Until Bill Dooley took the job at Tech, early 80s, all the top players in Virginia went to UNC or NC State. Dooley - and later Beamer - changed that - and while they aren't Alabama - they have now well passed all the North Carolina schools with their program. Not Alabama but they are now the top program in VA/ NC fwiw.

I think George Welch at Virginia actually had a great run, and did a great job recruiting in state. It wasn't until Welch was fading during his last few years that Beamer's program really took off, and Mike London's success in recruiting Virginia (which has not led to results on the field) has certainly had something to do with Tech's recent run of mediocrity.
Welsh did a commendable job at UVA but even with his best teams, he couldn't master Tech. They were more than a thorn in his side.
The final insult was Tech winning the ACC in their first year of membership, something UVA had struggled to do for decades.

This is spot on.Two years ago Bama took the #1 in state recruit, FSU took the #2, in both cases VT was the bridesmaid.
I think the staff there is a better coaching staff than recruiting staff and lets face it, to get a stud recruit to go to Blacksburg, you need a really good salesman or two. The difference between top 5 and top 25 is recruiting, you can "coach 'em up" only so far.

His playcalling in the redzone is awful, its almost as if they roll down the field get to the 20, and nut up.
3 trips in the first half last week, 9 pts. You are not going to win on the road doing that, I do not care who you recruited.
London only coached Richmond in 2008 and 2009 so there was the argument that he did well with Clawson's players (who left to be the OC at Tennessee) especially since they made it to the Semis in 2007.
That said, with the exception of a couple of years, UVA hasn't been relevant football (meaning ranked) in more than 20 years and Welsh is really their only successful coach over the past 60 years or so.
Maybe they could bring back Ben Martin? He may be growing tired of the AFA.
