Would Indiana State be a good fit for the MAC ? Geography ? Basketball ? Size of the School ?
No.
Why not ?

Yes! Makes sense geograohically. Would provide Ball State with a natural rival. Seems to play some good basketball but not sure about their Olympic sports. Obviously football would be an emphasis. I have always felt the natural expansion for the MAC should be in the Midwest and that Indiana State and Illinois State would be perfect fits.

Cue the NIU fans to melt down over the thought of Illinois State being mentioned as a MAC expansion candidate.
At under 12,000 students it is a bit small for a MAC school. In terms of geography it is an OK spot though not great because it is not really that close to anything. It also has a problem of being in a state that we already have represented that really isn't big enough to ask for two. Football has a ways to go before even thinking of something like that too.
They play in an old minor league baseball stadium off campus and only have about 11,000 students. Plus, outside of the last couple of seasons, they've never been very good.
Geography: Yes
Institution: Too small (undergrad is only 10K), academics are nothing special.
Athletics: He!! no. Basketball would be fine, but football drives the bus. While they've been ranked a couple of times the past few years, attendance has never consistently risen much more than 5000 or so even though they've played multiple ranked teams (per Wikipedia). And for what it's worth, I don't think any of their Olympic sports are very good either.

If we were to add a school from an existing MAC state, I would take Illinois State or Stony Brook over Indiana State, at the very least.

Too small, not competitive outside of maybe basketball, no market, they field the bare minimum number of sports to remain D-I.

The question that should always be asked before proposing a new conference member: In what way would they make the MAC better?
Great explanation.. That's why I asked ..
No. Ill State, Mo State fits. SIU is the most MAClike institution in the MVFC.

People need to stop bringing up that school in Normal or that troll is going to show up on this board and derail the thread until it dies of natural causes.
Need the Kochs to fund the rebirth of Wichita State football (I-A till disbanded in 1986) and get them in the MAC.

SIU??? Their school is a mess and they continue to lose enrollment like NIU.. their athletic department is a disaster, bottom half of the MVC.. no idea how thats a fit.. clearly behind WSU, ISU, UNI and even MSU..
Yeah, MacLord...we (Miami) used to play Wichita State all the time back in the 60's, etc. Also played Xavier every year until they dropped football in 1973 or 74 I think (I am sure most of you have seen the "We are Marshall" movie in which they beat XU the year after the tragic airplane crash). My pee-wee football team used to go to a Xavier football game every year...they had a neat old stone stadium built into a valley of sorts...seated about 10K as I recall. Their admin prolly did the right thing in disbanding football and spending their $$ to build up a prominent hoops program.
The poseur has arrived!

Damnit. Talk about ubiquitous. And omnipresent. Maybe even circumambient. 03-wink

MAC already has one team in IN. Conference does not need multiple teams in the same state, see MI & OH

Besides that IN St makes a ton of $ off Wichita State, Northern Iowa, Bradley & SIU going far in the men's hoops tourney. Leave for the MAC and that $ goes away.
Wichita has won 9 tourney games since 2000, SIU 5. The entire MAC has won 7.

While thats the line of thinking in the major conferences because of their TV deals, different deal in the smaller conferences..

Yet the Salukies reached the Sweet 16 in 07 and have won 3 tourney games since 2000. ISU hasn't been in the tournament since 99.

Interesting how many programs have joined the Pioneer league, keeping their football teams FCS, just non scholarship. Up to 11 teams now. As costs go up and state funding drops their membership should grow.
