One of my professors tried to make fun of me for playing football for UAB infront of my whole class, Haters make us famous 2017 lets go !!!!

Ridiculous that this is happening on our own campus.
Haters are going to hate!
shake it off, shake it off.
I've had a couple professors in the past couple of semesters who love to talk bad about anything that has to do with UAB or Birmingham.
Well, to try and balance this conversation, I had one professor who saw my #FreeUAB/#FireRayWatts sticker on my laptop on Monday and said that he liked it and I was going to get an automatic A in his course. Of course it was a joke, but I was glad he acknowledged it.

I've had these types of professors as well, but it always pains me to have to listen to teachers talk about how terrible UAB is and/or make fun of athletics.
Name, please.
In my experience, it was Dr. Messina (being the FAR of course he would enjoy my sticker). He has been openly vocal on his stance since December at least if not earlier.

Sounds like you should have commented back to them. They opened their mouth, fair game.

You do that after your grad is finalized and recorded
regardless of how you feel about the football program, this is COMPLETELY unacceptable (at any school in the country). you do NOT criticize a students choice to attend the school that pays you. EVER! for any reason. EVER!

this "educator" should be reprimanded, immediately (if not sooner)

He didn't say he criticized him. He said he tried to make fun of him. It really depends on what was said. It may have been a harmless joke that was not well-received or it may have been mean spirited.
i guess i just have a hard time imagining a comment where "making fun" of somebody wouldn't also be "criticizing" him. the fact is that this kid chose to attend this professor's institution of higher learning. i just can't imagine a scenario in which its okay to make fun of his reasons for doing so, or the path that took him there.
Is catbob a professor at UAB? I kid, but go read the Garrett Marino thread. Garrett is definitely a personality. He's got two years to show what he's made of.

It could have been something as simple as "Hey, you know there isn't a football team right now, don't you?"

Sometimes it is all in how sensitive the the reception of the comment in. On the other hand, the professor could be a jerk.
Screw it and let it ride.
Kid may not be quick witted enough to jab back at him. Go to class, and if the instructor keeps it up then file a complaint.

I am not defending the remarks - themselves.

However he can not and should not be reprimanded. It is called academic freedom. Further if he is tenured - he is completely protected.

A disdain of athletics by faculty is a very common occurrence. Two type of institutions where it may be a majority of faculty - High academic such as Ivy league and jealous profs at football factories.
Maybe this is a sign that UAB will become a football factory in 2017. 04-bow

Whether you are tenured or non-tenured, harassment is not protected under academic freedom. Which means if he told the professor that he didn't appreciate it and it somehow happens again, then he should be reprimanded.

exactly. of course, it does depend on what he said (i'm obviously assuming a scenario on the more malicious end of the spectrum--which may not be true at all). but making fun of a kid for going to your college (which is what he did, as i read it--he didn't make fun of him for playing football. he made fun of him for coming to UAB to play football) is not okay and doesn't fall under academic freedom.

if a business professor said "why did you come here if you want a history degree? thats dumb, you should've gone somewhere else"--i think thats inappropriate, and is the same thing

(again, my disclaimer is that i don't know exactly what he said)
