Known in some circles as more of a basketball school, Cincinnati excelled in football in recent years and without breaking the bank. In fact, the Bearcats ascened to No. 8 in the national rankings in 2009, the third and final year of head coach Brian Kelly's tenure there. In Kelly's program-revitalizing reign, the school spent an average of more than $13 million per year on expenses. Kelly left in 2010, but his former colleagues overcame his departure: After a disappointing four-win campaign in '10, Cincinnati went 29-10 over the ensuing three years. The program stayed consistent with changing leadership: Mark Dantonio (Michigan State), Kelly (Notre Dame) and Butch Jones (Tennessee) all left for greener pastures in recent years after spending three seasons on the sideline. Will Tommy Tuberville, entering his third campaign in '15, be next to depart?

If Texas would have lost, and they almost did, UC would have played in the title game.

Seriously, we were at a bar in Pittsburgh loaded down with UC fans and the place was going bazerk when time ran out. I ran around the place giving high fives to pretty much everyone there. That kick was such a brutal moment in one of the best days in Bearcat sports history.

We were down at Rising Star Casino. The last minute of the game, that place was almost silent as everyone was watching the game and it went crazy when the clock went to 0. Then when they put time back on and let them kick, it went crazy pissed!
Clock hits zero ... wife and I are running around the living room. She heads to computer to check plane flights. Ref comes back and puts the sec back on clock. Wife asks ... can they do that?

If we make the NC Game, you have to figure Kelly would stay...right? Crazy how a few milliseconds changed our program as much as it did. After Texas won, a lot of people failed to realize that we jumped TCU into 3rd in the final rankings. Would've been mighty interesting...then we would've gotten absolutely massacred by bama, but still!
Ndamakuh Suh was a monster in that game. He almost single handily put us in the title game.

It's really funny this is coming up because I just was getting into a heated argument about this with some co-workers last night. They claimed that even if UC would have made the national championship game that year that Kelly would have bolted before the game and left UC to twist in the wind while playing for a national championship. My argument is that the backlash would have been so great if a coach ever did something like that their career would take a huge hit, as would the reputation of the school who was behind the coach poach.
All in all no matter what happened that year Kelly was probably heading for his dream job at ND but what a piece of trash he would have been to abandon his kids before a national championship game. Again, no way to know what would have happened.
No chance Kelly doesn't coach the National Championship game. ND would have let him (like Urban coached Utah in the BCS game before going to FLorida) and he could not have passed on it.

Yup...my meltdown that night was epic. You know it bad when you get banned for 24 hours from Bearcat Banter, your wife tells you to sleep in the sofa and you are sitting an looking at a blank wall at 3am...still stewing.

You are 100% correct. There is no possible way Kelly leaves before coaching in the national championship, and no way ND asks him to. For anyone to say different is silly. I have often wondered if that would have changed his mind about leaving and if the university would have fast tracked all of the renovations, adding sports, etc. That we are seeing now. What if we beat BAMA? Then what?

Kelly had permission to stay with UC with the rest of the coaches for the Sugar Bowl and he decided not to.
Kelly was on the Dan Patrick show shortly after taking the ND job. Patrick asked him what he would have done if UC was in the title game. BK said "I'm coaching in the National Championship". I still think ND would gave hired him just after the NC game.
